Anyone else notice the Major Tom/Space Oditty possible tie in here??

This has to be a slight, tongue in cheek nod to David Bowie and Major Tom/Space oddity.. The fact that Future Tom(Tommy, as named in the movie, i believe..) is a man on a mission, piloting his spherical starship through space... and his name is Tom.. (well, Tommy, but close enough; the present day character was named Tom.)

It just seems like the director/screenwriter(s) wee just like, "Oh hell, why the hell not?? This movie is very artistic, and so was David Bowie, let's just make a little tie in, just for the hell of it.."

Any thoughts on the possible creative connection here??
