They most likely did this for the clue at the end; Wendy's clue was that she had her McKinley shirt on, so she took it to mean that Ian McKinley would kill her - they needed something that would point towards him, regardless of whether he himself was going to be the actual cause of her death or not.

Fun fact: in an early script both his name, and the clue were different.
