since the mom was in prison and the dad was, well, six feet under, what do you think happened to Dot and Nina? Do you think they were split up or did they stay together and move in with another family or something like that?
and now that Dot can talk and hear...i wonder what she would have done after that. like, at school and such.

From a purely fan-fiction standpoint...
I think with the parents indisposed, both girls found themselves closer than ever. They continued to attend high school, and after graduation they were roommates in college. Eventually Dot became a composer, and Nina got a great-paying day job as a stripper, thus fulfilling her lifelong dream.
Dot continued to be a quiet girl around others, but spoke up for herself throughout the rest of her life. Dot and her conflicted high school boyfriend decided it would be best to not see each other anymore, and later in life she married the man of her dreams, a fellow musician.

That's wonderfully put and that appears to be some great closure the girls. Especially Dot.
