This movie is so stupid

Don't waste your time with this piece of crap. They couldn't find any good quotes from film critics to use on the vcd cover and had to use quotes from HK cops...I can't believe how stupid this movie is.

I don't think it's stupid, it's however a vey good movie. The first 7 minutes of action was a shot taken, no cuts, first ever in movie history!
The action was amazing and great film to understand people's reaction in certain situation and the very instinct and emotion of human being.

reply

this is movie looked like a low budget POS.

And I thought after Infernal Affairs, all HK movies would step up in production.

And Kelly Chen can't act! she was terrible! What's with her trying to act smart by mixing English words with Chinese dialogue? And she was speaking fast too! don't think I can't hear that accent KellY!!

I can't believe people would buy this *beep* In the first fire fight, the robbers could walk around, WITHOUT kevlar vests, and only one out of all of them is shot when they were COMPLETELY surrounded by police! Also, the police van they hoisted came with a boatload of police officers who miraculously disappeared without a trace when the robbers came near it to seize it. The guy on the window with the AK had half his body and leg showing and he was able to walk away clean???? That's *beep*

Or the encounter with that lone robber at the bottom of the stairs. The cops had freaking guns in their hands already and yet the robber was able to reach inside his vest and pull out his gun., fire, then get away safely into the lift. If that isn't the biggest *beep* in the world I don't know what is! Absolutely a piece of trash that doesn't REMOTELY model real life! Waste of time.

Maybe sometimes that can happen? have you ever thought about it? there are so many shootings in america and yet a few of them have only escaped.

And this movie wasn't made to be ultra realistic
Gee you guys need to open up.

reply

It's an action movie... a really really outsandign action movie. If you want realism call for Wim Wenders.

reply

Clubhonda... You dont know *beep* about real life gun fights. So I think you should get yourself into one and see how realistic this movie portrays those real life things.

You idiot. I had to go through FIBUA in the army and we trained with live ammunitions. I have never had a real firefight with any robbers since I'm not in the Police, but that doesn't mean I don't understand ballistics and police tactics. Tell me what exactly is realistic about this gun fight dumass.

reply

Totally agree.

Neither the crooks or the police can hit each other (except for one injuried his leg) in 10 feets but the same crook later on can manage to hit a rolling gas can and another crook at the same time can use his cellphone to take some three snap shots in what .... like 5 seconds what kind of cellphone does that??!!

Suspension of disbelief is a necessary for this film but not necessarily appropriate for this film.

I think Johnie is the most overrated director in HK.
I have recently seen Election 1 & 2 and Breaking News.He didnt even seem to get the basics right. Poor casting which led to appalling acting (the actors cant even read the script properly, without the subtitle I sometimes find it hard to hear what they said EVEN THOUGH I AM A HONG KONGER, yea RIGHT! my native language is Cantonese and I need an ENGLISH SUBTITLE to understand what they're saying !!!), poor screenplay, poor original score. I dont like his style either, he made it impossible for audience to relate to the event and the characters.

Waste of time. Completely lost faith in Hong Kong movies

reply

Didnt Hitchcock shoot one of his movies in 20 minute long takes?

reply

And there was that movie "russian ark" that was one long steady cam shot for 90 minutes.

but what i think he meant was that was a very long continous shot with an action scene in it, not the first because hard boiled did a good one but this one was longer.

reply

its not intended to be realistic, it's more of a parabole about the power of the media.
But Kelly Cheng is as bad actress as she is pretty...:-)

reply

Yeah, its neither the longest shot nor the first movie to open with a long shot. Goodfellas and Touch of Evil both did it before this movie, and did it better. Still, despite the occasionally shaky camera, the shot is very impressive.

reply

John Woo had a scene shot that lasted for 2 minutes and 42 seconds for the movie Hard Boiled. As cool as the beginning of Breaking News was, it wasn't up to par with Hard Boiled for a scene like that alone.

reply

I just watched it last night. I was very dissappointed with this movie. There were some bits that I liked though. Oh well.

knuck if you buck

reply

hm? And I thought it was an action comedy... o.0 I loved the downright utter sillyness of it all. They stopping the whole action to grab a bite, the thugs biggering about over making lunch... I thaught it was a hillarious spin of the old police-movie... I'm swedish, we churn out "realistic" police flicks like Beck, Wallander, and it feels like hundreds each year, I just stopped notice them after a while. Then I saw this flick, imagined it was going to be some John Woo'ish action and, well... I laughed my ass of and was delighted over the lightheartedness of it all...

Nobody is bashing Hot Shots for its ridiculous action... I just thought that it was meant to be a comedy...

lighten up you guys... :D

reply

I laughed a few times to, but the ending wasn't really funny though was it?

Since when were shootouts in HK films supposed to be grounded in any sort of reality? It's all style, and it's supposed to be. If you want the authentic stuff, Michael Mann has been composing exciting, realistic set-pieces for the last twenty years.

reply

I wasn't opposed to the shoot outs. They were awesome. It was the boring bits in between that I didn't like.

has someone mentioned the whole "YES MADAM" thing? *beep* that was SOOOO retarded. And how about the 'humanising' scene with the robbers making food together and having good times over a meal. And THEN how the police responded by giving everyone DELUXE LUNCHBOXES so they looked good for 'the show'. AND THEN to cap it all off, that old retarded cop farting. *beep* it was the worst movie i've seen in a long long time.

There are obvious reasons for people who dig his movies and people who can't understand and appreciate them. To sum it up for you, the word "overrated" is overrated.

I think he is the most overrated director in HK because he has become almost an icon for the Hong Kong film industry. His films were nominated in Cannes, Venice and Berlin Film Festival three of the world's oldest, most influential and prestigious film festivals. And because of these nominations (no win as yet), back in Hong Kong he was hailed as if he was the best HK director in recent years. He became the most sought after director, a box office guarantee, actors are piling up to work with him….. Johnnie To to Hong Kong film industry is pretty much like Steven Spielberg to Hollywood. (maybe a little exaggerated, but you get the idea). But in my opinion he is no better than the likes of Ka-Fai Wai, Wai-keung Lau and Siu Fai Mak.

Most importantly, like you said, there are obvious reasons for people who like or dislike his movie, and I am just the one who can understand but didn’t appreciate his works (Election1,2 and Breaking News). It’s my opinion and I suppose you will just have to learn to deal with that.

Disagree there. He got everything right because he shoots things differently (that's always an obstacle when you expect too much) yet those are comprehensible.

It has nothing to do with shooting things differently. Some of the actors & supporting actors should not have been casted in these movies. They were in the movies for commercial reasons only but their acting was so horrible that they had made the movies almost provoking and disturbing to watch. Johnnie of all people should know what damage bad actors can do to a film.
Or perhaps he did know that but he just didn’t have the gut to stand up and say no to those movie investors who treated him like a cash cow. And I really don’t know which one bothers me more.

reply

Personally I thought it was a very good movie. Not conventional, not what people would expect, and these are qualities that make Johnnie To a great director. He does not believe in set standards, or following the norm, but expressing one's true self in the form of art. Isn't that what creativity is?? Nick Cheung is known for his Stephen Chow-like comedies, and has broke away from type-casting because of Johnnie To after working in other films like 'Election' and 'Exiled'. As well as the fact that he was the first director to get Andy Lau his HK Film Award for 'Running Out of Time'. In terms of techniques, I thought the film was well made, the dark, brooding music score (not your typical crappy keyboard music you would expect), explosive action and hints of dark comedy. Who said this film was low budget?? Well it looks at lot better than the crap that was available during the late 90's on poorly transferred VCDs (The ones with burnt on subs) of the same genre.

what is it with ppl and putting down actors they say is soo bad in a film? what gives?

the actors in this movie were great. now dont get me wrong im not a film buff or anything but know crap acting when i see one at there was nothing crappy in this movie nor were there anything crap about these actors. man just cos youre used to movies made from the u.s and love your linsey lohan not every movie has to be a hollywood type of film. how do you want chinese actors to act and peform, seriously? like george clooney, john holmes lol etc?

but i will add this, the only minor thing i didnt like was at the end and it was soo abrupt i always hate how once the climax of a movie has set in and settled into the end suddenly the credits roll up, yes theyre suposed to but not without showing the aftermath and then tie up loose ends in the movie. it wouldve been cool to show the press conference in full and then have some kind of reflection from cheung, kelly, and evryone involved, to mark off and state the turmoil they went through and THEN round off the movie and be reminded how the media likes to get involved and be a nuisance. or sumthing like that. overall i hate an ending that ends abruptly without giving us the audience to take it all in and settle down after the climax. its like have sexual intercourse, after youre done you dont just get up and leave lol. you have a lil reflection of things and then get comfy and relax and be satisfied by it all. the ending didnt give me much satisfaction basically. it was wham bam thank you kelly :D

BUMP

@Clarance_84, this is not the film film in history to feature an opening shot that lasts 7 minutes. Orson Welles did an 8 minute, single shot back in 1958 with "Touch of Evil". Also, it's probably not the film to do it, either.
