DVD with English-language subs criminally unavailable

This film seriously needs more exposure in the West. It's one of the best Thai films in recent years. The DVD is available in Thailand but has no English subtitles. Also, the ending was changed for Thailand commercial film screenings to make it happier. The directors' intended ending has been shown at film festivals and is much bleaker. Hopefully, if any companies overseas (hopefully Tartan, Magnolia, Palm or Madman will read this), they'll pick up the film-festival print of the film and master it for DVD.

Agree fully with the OP. Why have they still (March 2007) not released this, most brilliantly memorable movie, with English subtitles? It's quite extraordinary that it was screened in Thailand's cinemas with English subs, but when it came to releasing the DVD there were none. This is indeed all the more bizarre given that it is, without doubt, one of the most exceptionally outstanding Thai movies ever produced. Moreover, a world class movie, such as Ai Fak, deserves world class notoriety. But by releasing the DVD without English subs, an injustice has been done to its filmmakers. And, it's a great pity that so few have been lucky enough to have been touched by its tale. Luckily, I viewed it when it was originally screened and certainly will always remember Ai Fak as a most engaging tragedy which really should have gained the world class commendations that it deserves - had it only been marketed properly.
