This Guy Irritates Me to No End....

I don't know what it is about him, but he seems like a completely overrated hack to me. It's not because he's gay and it's not because my puny American brain cannot enjoy the subtleties of British humor (Eddie Izzard is one of my favorite comics of all time and I LOVE Monty Python!), but I just don't like this Graham Norton guy. How did he ever get his own show on Comedy Central, when Eddie Izzard would be TEN times the host that Norton is???

Also, you may think me a prude, but it makes me really uncomfortable that this show is on so early at night when my eleven-year-old sister is sometimes awake. I am, contrary to the assumptions that may be made about me, NOT an old school marm. I'm a twenty-year-old gent with a GREAT sense of humor and I love bawdy, funny television like South Park, Chappelle Show, Upright Citizens' Brigade, Mr. Show with Bob and David, etc. But this one is just a stinker. It's not so much the tasteless humor of the show that I mind, but it's just that Graham Norton tries WAY too hard to push the envelope and makes it seem as though the entire show is insulting the viewers' intelligence. Does anyone agree, or am I just not getting it???

I think that he talks about sex too damn much. It gets lame people. He does push the envelope in that regard, but it shows his gross lack of versatility. It seems that Comedy Central is trying to phase out Tough Crowd with his show, it seems that Colin is just too conservative for good ol Viacom.

Cheers,
John

Really?!?! That's quite a shame too, because I sometimes feel as if Colin Quinn and I have a Vulcan mind-meld thing going on. I'll think something in contradiction to one of his hopelessly obnoxious panelists, and then Colin will echo my sentiments precisely, saying exactly what I had been thinking a moment before! The guy speaks for the majority that most people refer to as the "common man". Whether or not some people may see that as a sad comment on the state of the common man doesn't even matter. It is apparently (trying not to generalize too much) what a large portion of working-class schmos and regular people such as myself wanna see. If Gaham Norton's fans want him to have a show, that's fine. You have every right to it and I wish Norton and his fans a happy ride. But when networks try and indoctrinate ME into believing that this Norton guy is who I myself want to see on TV, it irritates me. I deserve better than this, and so do all the other disappointed Comedy Central viewers out there. Forgive me if I'm griping or moaning too much, but haven't we had about enough of big media conglomerates TELLING us what to buy?!

It's funny -- I find it objectionable that Comedy Central has given Colin Quinn a show. I've never found him funny, on "Tough Crowd" or when he was on SNL. He has zero camera presence and lousy comic timing.

As for Graham -- if you're so put off by him and his show, don't torture yourself any longer. Don't tune in.

the fact that ur 20 and u call urself a gent may have something to do with ur not getting it.

I was wondering when someone would point that out.

Thank you! :P

I don't understand what assumptions, if any, could be made in relation to my comedic taste. To call my preferences elementary or immature based solely on the fact that I'm twenty years old would be thoroughly off-the-mark. I've enjoyed various comics and comedic actors ranging from Peter Sellers to Buster Keaton and everybody in between. My tastes are as eclectic as anybody's. The fact that YOU would presume to scoff at my age in such a condescending manner speaks volumes for your OWN juvenile mentality...not mine.

MovieMarauder6317, I get that you don't apprecate Graham Norton's humour, to be honest I really don't care what age you are, you what other British comedian's you like; the fact is you don't like Graham Norton becuase his sense of humour does not click with your own. Totally understand that, I don't like Eddie Lizard........ I'm not sure why, but his sense of humour doesn't click with my own, I like Graham Norton, and I like Billy Connelly, also I like Dame Edna....... I think my tastes are totally out of it, considering the first one is very into talking about sex and wearing loud and sparkly clothing, while the second likes to look (in his own words) 'wind-swept and interesting' and talks about Glasgow and all the places that he's been, and makes fun of himself and other's; and the final one, makes fun of everyone.
I'm not going to say to you that you immature or anything due to the fact that you are twenty years old, I am too. However please, don't call yourself a gent. Unless your English, then go ahead, if your American just say that your male. And yes, your twenty years old! Your too young to call yourself a gent! That's like me calling myself an old maid!
Okay........ That was my point......... And if anyone knows what my point was, please let me know.......... LOL.

yeah i think that you as an american don't get the british (or aussie for that matter) sense of humour. but it's all good. I think he's v. funny, love watching his shows, and love the dvds.

I like when people start out with "it's not because he's gay"....cause that's usually a red flag for, yes it is.

May I just say that Graham Norton is IRISH not British, there is a difference you know.

Its your turn Heather, no Heather its Heathers turn... Heather!!! ~ Heathers

reply

Yea; I'm not British; I'm Scottish.
It also depends on which part of Ireland; if its Northen Ireland; then yes; he is (depending on how you look on it) British.
But then we'll be going into pollitics, but fine, Graham Norton is Irish; I am Scottish; some of you are American, and other's are from Oz (that's the country, not the book..... Though it can be if you want!)

What irritates me the most is that most Americans equate comedy as slapstick. They cant tell the difference between comedy and stupidity. The first comedian that comes to mind is Jim Cary, if he wasn't so stupid, he wouldnt be funny. Humour, I must admit, is a personal thing. I find that really good humour is subtle. ie, you have to think about it. And, by the way, Dame Edna is NOT British.
Also, age is not a guage to a persons since of humour.
