What is a 'gitana,' anyway?

I notice they all dress like gypsies with lots of jewelry and whatnot.

Oh, okay, thanks... what country does it take place in?

Didn't the Roma or "gypsies" originally come from somewhere near India, maybe about a thousand years ago or so?

Does "Gitanas" strike you as having anything to do with actual Roma life, or is it more or less a rehashing of old movie stereotypes? Are there any shows or movies you've seen that seem somewhat accurate about Roma?

A recent episode showed Father Juan's boss ordering the Roma to remove "Santa Sara" from the church. Does the Catholic hierarchy regard Roma as being "heretics" of some kind? Have the Roma ever been connected with the so-called "Wiccan" practices? I was just wondering how the notion originated that the Roma can put "curses" or "spells" on people.

Just wanted to clarify.

Okay, thanks. Is that "Malarribo" an actual town, I wonder? (Not sure I spelled the name right.)

i believe the setting is around puerto rico its south to it. i mean the place exists but i don't know if they actually tape it there.

reply

Is not set in PR,the place doesn't exit,at least in PR and they tape it in Mexico.

I've read about the persecutions of Roma by the Nazis and to this day they get treated as second- or third-class citizens in many parts of the world. Even in "modern" countries like the US, many people seem to believe in the curses and spells or that Roma mainly make a living from con games or swindles. Like most "gadjos," I've never met an actual Roma that I knew of. Would you say most Roma would like us to be more aware and appreciative of your culture, or is it more a matter of "We don't expect that but we'd just like to be left alone and not harassed"?

Is not in Puerto Rico,is in Sinaloa,Mexico.

Dear Lord, this is a remake of 2000 chilean tv series "Romané", set in real chilean town Mejillones (it was filmed there too), and describes the relationship between romaní people (gypsys) and "gayé" (not gypsys; in the original series, chilean people, in this soap-opera remake, mexican people).

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language.
