Just curious...

Knowing how sensitive middle eastern cultures are to gay and lesbian issues, how graphic does it get? And what are the laws against being so graphic in the middle eastern cultures?

reply

India is not in the Middle East.

Sorry about that. I proabably shouldn't generalize on that.

Ok, same question as I posted but narrowed down to Indian.

(Not that I think of it, India should be more considered asian. Looks like I learn something everday)

How do bollywood stars who make movies like that survive then?

Hinduism is actually accepting of homosexuality. Indian society, on the other hand, not so much.

I don't know if it's because of foreigners who ruled India for a while (Muslims and then British) or just humans naturally discriminating against a minority. I'm going with the former. I know that India was sexually open once upon a time and the British banned a lot of things like public kissing and the effect is still there on Indian society.

That's interesting to hear.

In terms of the movie, how far did they go with the homosexual scenes? I mean, have there been nudity in any bollywood films? If so, I'm guessing that it's ok if any nudity that's actually shown on screen is #1 tasteful (take that what you will) and #2 heterosexual.
I've never seen the movie so I don't know if there are any nude scenes or graphic content of the women together. I just though in a society that is at least half that are strongly against homosexuality, that anything that graphic would be banned completely.

No kissing, some skin show, foreplay and sex covered by bed sheets.
If you ever visit india make sure to visit Khajuraho. You will see the most beautiful illustrations of graphic lesbian sex carved in the walls of the temples there.

India was a very open society once upon a time, sex and sexual experimentations were considered normal and healthy, the walls of Khajuraho even depict beastality and some supernatural forms of sexual intercourse.

With urbanisation, I think a lot has changed.
Maybe because of the various invasions of India by Moghuls, Afghans Mongols, Portugese and British, The women were raped and treated inhumanly. Thats when sex took a bad name probably and so we changed from an open sex society to a closed door sexually inhibited society.

Just my hypothesis.

I have this film at home and it was my first taste of Bollywood movies! There are no sex scenes as such, just a lot of inference by the way certain scenes were acted out, ie.. The girls looking into each other's eyes, a bit of skin, etc.. but nothing like the U.S. movies.

What I loved about the film was the storylines, the twists and turns in the plot which reminded me of Agatha Chrisite. I have to say that this movie totally "sold" me on Bollywood films and I now have a large collection of movies. Bollywood spares not expence on the filming with special effects, locations, etc.. and are every bit as good, in not BETTER their Hollywood counterparts!

I would love to see this movie "Girlfriend" and many others, re-maid for western audiences as they are so well written, and would be huge box office hits in America, Australia, etc.. I would now rather watch a Bollywood movie, than a Hollywood one!!

RickenbackerRules! I love your quote there. Is it yours? if so can I add that to my favorite quotes of all time on facebook? You'll get the credit for it for sure.

Hi "Nightstar ONC".. Yes, it is my quote. I'm an aspiring writer for television and am trying to get a show produced in Hollywood. In an effort to keep me encouraged and to keep my spirits up, I have listened to and read many motivation speeches and books and this quote came to me. The first part is loosely based somewhat on a Bible quote... "Faith is the evidence of things hoped for, the substance of things not seen" (HEBREWS 11: 1) the second part is my summation of the first... "If you have dreams and don't pursue them, then you delude yourself!" I don't want to wake up one day with regrets as to why I never pursued what could have been, that is the worst thing that could ever happen to a person!!

Yes, it would be an honor if you used my quote, I'm glad it inspires you that much. My name is Paul O'Callaghan, just for the record. I also have a Facebook account. Would love to catch up with you on it!

FYI... I am in one of those "slumps" now, so your interest in my quote has also boosted my spirits.. THANK YOU!! :-)
