How to Watch a DVD

Fantastic animations like "Ryan" tend to not get a theatrical release of their own, or even to be co-released with a feature-length film, and they're too short to have their own DVD, so seeing them outside of festivals can be problematic. A solution is to get the DVDs of the Oscar Shorts. Sometimes all the short nominees for a year are on just one DVD, other times a year will have separate DVDs for Animated Shorts, Live Action Shorts, and Documentary Shorts. These readily available DVDs are a very good way to see these.

The DVDs tend (unnecessarily in my opinion:-) to fake you into believing that everything on them won a recent Academy Award. This isn't always true; in some cases the DVDs actually contain all the nominees in the category, and in other cases the films on the DVD are from several different years. This can be confusing, but no matter, in my experience everything on these DVDs is always excellent ("recent winner" or not).
