BIID

Looks like the first film (that I know of) that seems to be about BIID. Has anyone on here seen it at Sundance yet? Any comments? Odd psychological disorders always pique my interest and Ive been eager to find out more about this disorder/subculture ever since I learned about it about a year or so ago.

Yes, I saw it at Sundance last Saturday. The film opens with a reported incident of BIID, but the thematic background has more to do with the superset of disorders that include BIID. The story is told from a disabled character's point of view, so we get a somewhat unorthodox introduction to it. It's not quite accurate to say the film is "about" the disorder. The plot transcends it in a very clever way and is mostly about the special relationship between the principal characters.

If you find such disorders interesting then you should definitely plan to see this film in the spring when it receives wider release. Carlos Brooks did considerable research on the BIID-type subculture and shared it with the principal cast. He was not able to collaborate directly with any members of the subculture, so the portrayal will be the interpretation of an outside observer. But he has written the script so that an accurate portrayal of the disorder in general is not strictly necessary or intended.

Sounds good! Yeah, I wasnt looking for some sort of documentary on it, but just that that subculture is portrayed, and accurately it seems, is cool enough for me. Did they actually use the term BIID?

It was mentioned by name only once. There's not much exposition through dialogue; what little there is occurs in one scene in Fiona's apartment. Most of the thematic exposition occurs through demonstration, and it includes BIID and attraction to disability. The story is told largely from Isaac's point of view, which makes it interesting to learn about these disorders from a disabled person's point of view.

What's BIID?

BIID stands for Body Integrity Identity Disorder .. Was familiar with the disorder but didn't know it's name...I found out the name by typing "BIID" into google just now.. Search engines are great for this sort of thing.....

BTW here's a great documentary on the subject:

Don't forget conversion disorder :-P Personally I think it's more interesting.

Conversion disorder is a convenient label doctors have come up with for neurological diseases and symptoms they cannot understand.
