Theatrical version had scene at end of Lizzy and D'Arcy at Pemberly kissing. Why is scene cut out in dvd copy?

reply

The European/UK version was edited both in the theatre and on the DVD. The ending that was shown in the US can be found in the extras.

If there aren't any skeletons in a man's closet, there's probably a Bertha in his attic.

How does the European/UK version end?

reply

When Mr. Bennet says his line about being at leisure as Elizabeth walks out of the room.

Thank you Julie-30. That's odd to me because I always thought the film should have ended with them kissing at sunrise. It was a perfect ending, except that they didn't kiss. As much as I like the scene with Mr Bennet I can't imagine it as a fabulous ending for a great romance. So they tacked on the scene at Pemberley, which always felt tacked on and awkward (especially Darcy's shorts!). Does the UK DVD offer the alternate ending?

reply

Actually, that ending wasn't "tacked on." It was the original ending of the movie, but it didn't test well outside of North America so they lopped it of for Europe and other places. We here in North America (and, I think, certain Asian countries) got the original version.

That is so interesting. I can understand why the ending with Darcy in his skivvies didn't test well. I really think that if they'd ended with a kiss at sunrise it would have been perfect. I thought they had to tack on a kissing scene at the end because they hadn't gotten the kiss in the sunrise shot. I had it completely wrong! (I always stop the film after the sunrise shot anyway.)

Thanks for the info!

I actually really like that it ends with an intimate moment between them after they are married rather than with the engagement or wedding. In the book we get a wrap-up at the end and I thought this was a good way to give the sense of their having a life together in a visual media. (But then I’m American so I guess that’s to be expected. ;)

As to his attire, aren’t those breeches he is wearing? Either way, I think it makes sense for him to be under dressed here alone with his wife before bed.

Somewhere (sorry can't recall where; it's been years) I read the opposite, that the British version didn't test well with the American focus groups so they filmed the kiss ending and in fact Keira Knightley had to wear a hairpiece because she'd cut her hair short for her role in Domino.

I miss Dwight. Congratulations, Universe . You win.

Keira wore a wig for the entire movie. As did, by the way, Jennifer Ehle in P&P95.

I was just reading about the "controversy" over the ending(s) and to me it seems like the best ending would have been them kissing in the morning mist scene.

While the North Am version is charming and sweet, with Mr Darcy in his underwear, it's not Jane Austen.

And the UK version to me is unsatisfying because they don't kiss!!! (Yes, we finally get together and...touch heads???)

So I vote to re-shoot the dawn scene with them kissing! Until then I will continue to stop the dvd after the dawn scene and close my eyes and imagine them in their wonderful passionate first kiss! (which looks a lot like their intense 'almost kiss' in the rain at the Temple of Apollo!)

Thank you.
