What happened when the assassin shot his pistol?

I don't understand something. When that assassin ran into Elizabeth's palace and pointed a pistol at her, he stood there for a while and then eventually shot the pistol. But nothing happened. What happened? Did it misfire?

Also, why would he give up his own life to try to kill her? What was his motivation?

that whole scene was merely designed to paint lizzie as an immortal deity, a celestial being impervious to mere bullets.. <barf> LOL

again, just another of the ridiculously fictionalized 'fairy tale' propaganda 'twists' that account for over 90% of this foolish fiasco of a pseudo-historical flick..

it wasn't the fall from her 16th-floor penthouse that killed her, it was the landing

You mean that didn't actually happen? Pistols do misfire so I thought maybe that's what happened.

An assassin who tried to shoot President Andrew Jackson also misfired both his guns.

Is the BBC version of Elizabeth I more accurate? Here it is if you want to see it.

The gun wasn't loaded, there's a conversation in the movie between Walsingham and his brother where this was mentioned.

Yip, it was unloaded. Can't remember exactly why. Anyone?

Spain planned it; they wanted the gun to be empty, so that she would retaliate against a Catholic Queen, and give them an excuse to attack England.

^FINALLY an answer! I've wondered about this part so many times

That did actually happen. That was part of the plan, to kill her at her prayers.
