I really Liked Grandmas Boy and ExistenZ, Stay Alive, and Gamebox 1.0 wasn't that bad either. I just wanted to know if anybody else knows of some other videogame based movies. I'll start of the list.
Well, I heard a rumor of a film project based on the award-winning and acclaimed Myst series (Cyan/Broderbund)... but I thought I read budget issues put it off.
You forgot the godfather of the movie-based-on-a-computergame genre: Tron (by Disney)... A couple years ago they actually made a game called Tron 2.0, full of vivid fluoride colours :)
The other way around would be: Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy...
Oh... and Hitman is making its debut on the silver screen soon as well...
Tron 2.0 is awesome. I'm getting some VR glasses soon, and I can't wait to play it on them. If you liked tron 2.0 you may also like Darwinia. Fantastic game!
If you like this and eXistenZ, I'd recommend Brainscan (with Ed Furlong) and Stay Alive (with Frankie Muniz). The Stay Alive one has a much more graphically pleasing game element, but it's about a console game intruding on real life, as opposed to a virtual environment. eXistenZ is strictly RL feel, a completely VR5 kinda world (without the shows coloration concept).
I miss VR5 too. Great TV show.
The less a man makes declarative statements the less apt he is to look foolish in retrospect.
As good as Gamebox 1.0 was -- I loved all the "in game" footage -- it still took its beginning *and* end from Brainscan, one of my all-time favorite movies.
You might want to also check out Evolver (1995) and a movie called Nightmares from 1983. Nightmares has a story about a video game with Emilio Estevez in it, and you could also check out WarGames (1983). Like some of the other posters said, Brainscan is definitely a good one.
Saw this from the Netflix service on my PS3. It's like "TRON" meets "Scary Movie". After watching "TRON", I honestly think there should be a broadened market for movies about video games worldwide.
"Now You're Playing With Power!" - Nintendo Entertainment System
this movie was not as bad as it could have been(not all that good either) but Existenz is definitely the best of the bunch.
"If you hate it when people post signatures they are 100% proud of and try to get others to join them, and are 100% proud of it, copy this and make it your signature"
i forget the name of it, but there is an asian horror movie (either japanese or korean, iirc) about an indie development company travel to a creepy house in the middle of nowhere to map it for use in a video game they're creating.
