They also cut the part about Wilbur having his feelings hurt when Fern became less interested in him and more interested in her boyfriend. I never read the book, but thought it was an important part of the cartoon when Wilbur was feeling down about that and Charlotte had to explain to him, "She's growing up," and Wilbur responded, "He's not even radiant," to which Charlotte replied, "He is to Fern." In this version, Wilbur was happy for Fern and that was it. It was more believable that, based upon his sensitivity, he would be hurt and confused, and that somebody wiser (Charlotte) would have to explain that things change in life.
