Mix of Yang and Takeshi? DVD transfer?

At least that is what I initially thought. This has a certain dramatic tone of Edward Yang's "Yiyi," especially since it centers around the everyday issues of a close-knit family and each character is so well-defined. On the other hand, it has a certain subtle comedic flair and a touch of surrealism that reminded me of Beat Takeshi's "Kikujuro." Anyone else feel this way?

Excellent movie aside, I felt that the Dvd transfer was horrible. It as very blurry and the colors seemed washed out. This is in regards to the Viz pictures recent region 1 one release. Anyone else experience the same?
