way ahead of his time

Before watching this documentary, I didn't know that much about Jack Johnson. I must say that he was way way ahead of his time. He was a lot like athletes of today. He liked the clothes, the bling bling, lots of women, and the fancy cars. He was a true pioneer I guess. It's too bad he didn't get the national recognition during his time as the top boxer. Things have changed a lot though. Today athletes of all colors are adored. The money they make and the endorsement deals are endless.

Is it me, or were the women really ugly in those days?

LMAO!!!

Hey Billy, they're still ugly, they just know how to hide it better. Like Chris Rock says - women, the VISUAL liars ;o)

Yes he was ahead of his time both in and out the ring! I think he would have knocked out any of the current heavyweight champs, just my opinion!

if he'd been born in the 20th century i think he would have been one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. In his prime i don't think any heavyweight of any era would have beaten him. IMO.

"Perhaps he's wondering why someone would SHOOT a man before throwing him out of a plane..."

Then you've never seen him fight. Much like a lot of the Ali fans who call him the greatest and have never seen his fights. He got a lot of robberies in his later years and was a very boring fighter, but he fought everybody and anybody in the division's Golden Age.

There was the pre-Dempsey era and then the post-Dempsey era.

Johnson was a typical boring plodder of the old guard and would have had no chance against the aggressive fighters of later years.
