DeLuca Scrubbing in on a surgery?

How on earth does a man with only 1 arm and his surgical career on the line scrub in? Will he just be there as an observer? Surely he can not be allowed to operate with one functioning arm...

He was just observing. He still can (and needs to) learn.

He might not have to if his career is over due to his injuries.

It's not over. The thing that might have ended his career was his eyesight, but Jackson was able to save it, so his career isn't over.

Ok ok so they expect his arm/hand to make a full recovery too? Sorry. I must have missed that part of the episode. It did keep cutting out the signal while I was watching it. I know I missed a few things.

His arm wasn't injured. He's in a sling because his clavicle was broken. But yes, it'll heal.

His hand isn't injured, but even if it was, didn't they miraculously cure Derek's hand injury, after the plane crash? They'll just do the same for Deluca, too.

He's healing - he's not an invalid. Of course he can still scrub in to observe a surgery.

"That's what I do... I drink, and I know things."

reply

Derek's hand was not miraculously get cured. He went through a number of surgeries, had to get part of his sisters leg taken for grafts. He had physical therapy. I'd say it was at least 6 months before he could do surgery again

reply

Exactly. He can still watch and Bailey and Meredith can explain each step to him.

reply

I lol'd when thinking about him just winging it with one arm and using his mouth at times. 

He was just observing, but the other factor he was wearing a cast and those things get nasty. No way you let someone in the OR with that unsanitary thing anywhere near the patient.

He wasn't wearing a cast, just a sling, which could be removed/traded for a clean one.

When have the Grey's doctors ever cared about that? These are women that wear heavy makeup and ear jewelery during surgeries.

In reality... that wouldn't be allowed either.

reply

The earrings have always bothered me! I'm always waiting for one to fall off into the patient.

reply

I was wondering how he would even scrub his hands if one was unmovable in a sling. I was also thinking of all his bloody looking wounds. I didn't think it looked very sanitary. Why would he scrub in vs. just watching from the observation deck.

reply

Because Grey cares more about taking Alex' side and rub Bailey's nose in it than the health and safety of the patient on the table.

Meredith told DeLuca to bootie up not scrub in.

It actually means the same thing. You have to be completely sanitary when you go into an OR even if you do not touch or go near any patient. Beings that his arm is resting in a non-sanitary sling. I would not allow him into an OR. He should watch from the upstairs observation deck.
