Why does he have to physically change to look like Noah?

Never understood that. Yes it's kind of funny the first 5 minutes and then after that it just becomes pointless, especially when his beard turns white, wtf? He could have done the same work regardless, Noah wouldn't have looked like that because it's the only way he could build an ark or get animals to obey him, he would have looked and dressed that way because that's how everyone was at the time. The character could have done the same work without looking like a caricature.

He also didn't need the animals.
In fact all he needed was a moderate sized boat that would have taken, what, a third of the time to build (they all seemed to fit on the deck, the boat was for the animals...)

It was all for comedy.

The size makes sense too. Because if you see the ride in the flood, the boat gets knocked around quite a bit by the flood and objects in the way. If the boat was smaller, it might have cracked. I thought it would when it smashed into the house. But because of its size and strength, it held on. Same reason why big ships can handle storms against small boats that will capsize.

Yes what definitive prankster said.

What's really funny (not necessarily in a comedic way, but yeah that too) is the people who don't "get it." What would have been totally pointless if this guy built a boat in his back yard strictly for the purpose of saving his neighbors from the flood... or more realistically warning his neighbors to head for higher ground like FEMA did with Katrina. It HAD to be authentically Noah, and it HAD to be a big deal just because it was necessary to get the same responses that Noah got when he built his ark. It had to completely parallel the story of Noah and the ark or not at all.

Yeah, I never really got that either...why couldn't Evan build the ark looking the way he looked and dressing the way he dresses. Was it really necessary to give him a beard that wouldn't shave off and make him wear robes?

As a much later response, I believe Evan's changing appearance was meant to be a constant reminder to HIM that he had a job to do--to get the ark built by a specific time. If he had looked liked his regular self there would have been the potential for him to be distracted by his new duties as a congressman.

His appearance, and the animals, were there to draw attenton to Evan. If he had just been some guy who had been building a boat in his spare time, there would've been no need for the reporters to show up. A guy who looked like Noah, built an Ark like Noah and had animal surrounding him at all points, even in important senate meetings, would attract the press.

God's plan was to prove that Congressman Long was corrupt, and to highlight the cracks in the damn. The whole thing was just showmanship, to make the press turn up to witness this.
