Overrated , except for Dench and Guest

I have only seen about 1/2 of this movie
I rented . One of the things i like about rent DVD's
is that I can watch it at my own pace.
Judy Dench is once again great and it was a bonus to
see Christoperh Guest in this movie.
However, I thought the movie did not live up to all the rave
reviews . It's a delightful piece of fluff , Worth seeing for
the photography and for Guest and Dench , but hardly what I would
call terrific.

Sorry you felt like that - I personally loved it. Will Young was a bonus but I would have enjoyed it (perhaps not so much) if some other actor had played the part.

The tone of the film changes about half way through so you have missed that part.

reply

Over rated? Really? I adore this movie. But like any other movie, its not for everyone!

A "delightful piece of fluff" sums it up pretty neatly, and that's good enough for us. We watched with the family after eating too much on Thanksgiving, and it fit the bill perfectly. Good acting, a few chuckles, nice period detail, old songs for Grandma and naked women for the teens.

easmax You serius need to think about what time the movie is made over and need to know the historie of the teater or how it is spelled

and Bob and Dench did play good togetter

reply

HAHA! That is probably the comment with the worst grammar/spelling EVER on here!
Serius? Historie? teater? Did play good together?

I never even knew this film was 'rated'. I thought it was completely pointless. Good acting can not create a point. I thought some of the scenes about the bombing and war time hardship were just thrown in completely randomly and I must say that the characters were not develeoped at all adequately.

Basically if someone told you the story/narrative - you would say: 'Err...so what?'

And i doubt anyone would remember any of these charcters for very long.

Basically - What was the point of this movie?

IF it was meant to be a comedy there should have been more laughs. If it was meant to be a drama; there should have been more pivotal moments and some depth to the characters. If it was supposed to be comedy drama; it needed to be good.

Frankly the film was none of the above.

Making good films is certainly not easy. But I do wish the people behind them WOULD try harder. Especially as they are not expected to make any money whatsoever at the box office; therefore why not put the effort into actually making a good film?*

By way of explanation I think our American cousins shuold know something about the British film industry. It is that - and I don't know about this film in particular - funding for films is not given with any pretence that the film will make a profit. It is given either/or both as a result of a well known tax dodge - whereby investment in films can be used by companies greatly to their tax advantage. And secondly - the national lottery has more money than it knows what to do with (it literrally has a severe backlog of unspent funds) and thus chucks money at all sorts of films - that statistically have about as much chance of success at the box office as zero divided by a million.

The result being that for the last ten years no one in the British film industry has had their efforts exposed to commercial success. And the plentiful supply of funding has seemingly resulted in a complacncy behind these films.

End result: Mediocrity.

We may have good actors. But anyone with any talent in production/writing is soon off to America. And so they should.

Ooh - that turned into a bit of a rant!
Oh and by the way: some films that are supposedly british like James Bond or Harry Potter are not really british as they are funded by American FIlm companies and intended for an American audience. Though many of them do come here for the same tax advantages as mentioned above.

Oh and p.s. - I know Full Monty made money. But just check out the films that are British and see how well they do. Also ask yourself how many times you have seen a British film in teh cinema; or even when the lsat time a film like Mrs Henderson was actually shown in your local cinema?

Well I enjoyed it. And so did lots of other people.

yeah iits a bit easy goin but i guess they were tryin to get that hey were being shat on by boms but it dont' matter stiff uppa lip thing goin. didnt lik the newsreals cool songndanc routines though

reply

I hardly understood a word of your post. Is this what you mean?:

"Yes, it's a bit easy going, but I guess they were trying to portray that, although they were being bombed, they kept going and kept their stiff upper lips. I didn't like the newsreels but there were cool song and dance routines though."

English helps you know!

reply

Goodness me - your spelling and grammar is appalling - I haven't a clue what you are going on about!

reply

I disagree heartily about the character development - the film is practically a study of Dame Judi's character, and how she alternatingly alienates and bewitches the people around her, her selfishness, and her often misguided attempts to make the people around her happy.

But that's just my opinion. And, actually, the movie got a lot of play over here in the indie theatres, and some of the really big multiplexes (sp?), too, though this is probably only true in the cities and suburbs and college towns.

reply

Only seen HALF the movie yet felt compelled to give a review!? OMG!

This is so typical of most movie 'watchers' today... rent it and watch it at 'your own pace'.
Why not try to give the director, cast and writers a fair chance and see it ALL AT ONE TIME? Maybe then the momentum would build, the characters could be developed and you would understand the film.

It's not unlike buying a poster of the Mona Lisa, cutting it into 1 inch bits, throwing them into a hat and pulling them out at random and trying to understand what Leonardo was saying with his painting!

WAIT! easmax must have written this as a joke! No one could seriously say stuff like this and mean it!
Thanks for the laughs! Almost as good as the post on The Notebook which stated that the movie was great but 'it would have been a lot better if they had dumped the old people'! HUH? That was the WHOLE point of the movie!

reply

I don't think it's overrated at all, I've only seen bad reviews for it. But I liked it, all of it not just Judi.

How about you actually finish watching the entire film before giving us your review?
