Thoughts: on Endings and Sequels

Just some musings. Feel free to react.

1. I watched the movie for the 16th time now. The ending still really affected me. I almost cried. It still is a very powerful ending.

I looking for the moment where it all got serious. I mean, at first it was still all play, fun, first times. But then, after that, it got serious and the drama stepped in. For example, when Gabe started crying after the I hate you scene, I laughed, hard. But after a while, I knew that it wasn't all fun anymore and that he really loved Rosemary.

2. I think I don't need a whole sequel, just an epilogue. I just need to know if they got back together or not, I'd be okay with that. And a timeline too, an official one from the writer. I hope I get to sit down with her to ask her these questions!

Yeah it is a wonderful movie and I think your right that at first it seems playful and fun, and I think that's because Gabe is still new to all this. Then towards the middle and end you are rooting for them, even though they are only 10 3/4 and 11. He is really in love with her and he basically gets his heart broken, but I really like the end quote when he says that there will be other girls out there but he will never have another first love, that will always be her. So its like he has moved on and understands that this love was preparatory for when he’ll meet new girls. His heart kind of mends when he sees his parents at the end and he understands that not all love has to end, even though his love with Rosemary seems to end, he still has a special place for her in his heart and always will, and he has hope that he can love again.

I was really hoping that at the end it would have like a flash forward of them getting married or something like that, or them meeting at college after so many years apart, then there love would be fresh again but yet Gabe would still have those memories of his first love and so it would be exciting! I saw on amazon that there is a book of Little Manhattan, I wonder if it is exactly like the movie or if it expounds more on certain things like the ending. Who knows maybe someday they will make a sequel!

There are no stupid questions...just stupid people!

I heard it is exactly like the movie... Too bad...

I absolutely agree with you. Most sequels are horrible and ruin everything, but an epilogue would be perfect. What would really happen to Gabe and Rosemary? Gabe, the future placekicker? and Rosemary...? Who knows what'd she do in her future.

This may sound really corny, but how would it seem if they come across with one another again but already taken in a relationship or marriage? What would happen between those two? Will past feelings resurface? I don't know if the director would actually come out with a sequel, but I have tons of ideas for it. Haha, tonight was my 10th time watching it. I'm a big fan.

It's such a great movie, it never gets old!

reply

This may sound a little stupid... I've been looking at you say that an epilogue would be perfect for a long time... but I don't know what an epilogue is. Could you like explain a little? Thanks!

reply

Don't worry about it.

An epilogue is any device that gives us a glimpse and just a glimpse of what happens in the future. For example, after the movie and the ending credits they could insert a small scene of Gabe and Rosemary, a bit older, holding hands. That way, we know they ended up together anyway. It won't ruin the ending 'cause it doesn't go into details.

Another example would be a short narrative, just a paragraph or two, that does the same thing. I just don't want to see too much details to preserve the ending, I just want to satisfy my curiosity.

Hope I explained that clearly.

And you're welcome. ^^

They should definitely have a sequel!!! it would be sooooooooooo cute!!!!

*Still waiting patiently for the sequel to come. The cows have come home already.*

Ya know I have been thinking a sequel would ruin it but an eplique would help

i love it just the way it ended
i love endings lol

how about an epilogue of them meeting again later getting married happy and living in the romantic tree view apartment holding hands.

I understand how you feel, that you need some closure on the story but maybe the story provides closure, just not the closure you wanted. Life and love does not always lead to happy ending and I think that's the point being made here. Yes, we want these two kids together and because they don't get together at the end, that does not mean there is more story to tell. It's like GONE WITH THE WIND, did you find the film experience incomplete because Rhett and Scarlett didn't get back together or Hubbell and Katie in THE WAY WE WERE..was the story incomplete because the ending wasn't happy? This was a love story with an unhappy ending, that's all. I don't think there's more story to be told here. She decided she was too young for a relationship, they both move on, and his parents are assumed to reconcile. I believe the story has been told.

reply

I understand that completely. :D Just wishing.

There's a "New York Lovestory" for you.

its going to be difficult to create a part II for this movie because you dont want a repeat to other mainstream movie to this independence movie.

I think that a sequel or epilogue would be nice, it should be when they're already around 40 or 50. Rosemary turns into a very popular designer and very strict, meanwhile Gabe works as an architect. Dunno what happends next.

"Run Mr. Krabs! Run like you're not in a coma!"

I believe that the ending itself gives a few hints. As we watched in the 5 min there is a maybe (not mature enough), a definitely not (the guy in the elevator) and a yes (the boy's parents). If Gebe focus on his future he might get to meet Rosemary again. His parents story shows that they met young somewhere in the way the lost each other but then they started over again that's the meaning of the film in my opinion. If you make a move its always for the better and there is hope when you open up otherwise you never had a chance at the first place.

They'll probabley both go to NYU and would run in to each other in class.

reply

you know... the NYU scenario is a really cool idea. It sure beats Columbia U, since NYU is a bit easier to get into. haha.

I agree. I think the movie ended on an unnecessarily dark note. Maybe "dark" is the wrong word to use. BITTERSWEET is a better word, only I felt it was too bitter. The fact that she's going to camp for 6 weeks and then private school is awfully convenient. If they got to spend the summer together before going their separate ways that would have been fine by me. To slice their story with a guillotine like that just seems cruel lol. I get what the filmmakers were trying to do and my problems are probably because of my weak heart lol but still.

But think of it this way: This movie is fictional. It never happened, it's just a movie. Therefore you can say that anything happened to these characters and it would be perfectly valid because both are fictional. So create your own epilogue! That's probably as far as we can go at this point.

I personally like to think Gabe came to his senses and told Rosemary not to go to camp and to spend the rest of the summer with him. But that's irrelavant.

My version of an epilogue: Gabe in his early 20's is walking around NYU whereupon he bumps into a young woman. She drops some stuff she was carrying and Gabe leans down to help her pick it up. One they both get a good look at each other they realize with shock who the other person is. Both of them smile and say each other's names as a way of confirmation. The next shot is of them sitting at a table having coffee and talking. They talk very enthusiastically but music is playing so we dont hear what they say. The camera zooms out and that's that. It's up to the audience to decide what was going on in that conversation and what becomes of it.

That's satisfying enough for me.
