Similar Films to Kammerflimmern?

Hey Guys,

I absolutely adore this movie. It's one of my all time favourites. I love this type of melancholic european romance. I'm wondering if anyone knows any other films that are similar in this regard? The only other film i rate as highly as kammerflimmern is Samotari ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0219288/ ). I'm not really interested in American films (don't like them much) but would love any suggestions for any other films similar to off-beat.

Cheers!

I'm also looking for films like this, those that revolve around a lonely, central character, preferably set in an European city.. you know, a lonely person on the metro, on the streets etc, which sets a melancholic tone.

I'm not sure if Cashback would be your cup of tea but you can certainly try it, it's British :) It's quite arty and melancholic. I'm not sure about any other films similar.. I think I have to depend on my luck to coincidentally see one like this from international film festivals...

Hope this helped!

films that had a similar impact on me/made me feel the same way:

Head On (Gegen die Wand) by Fatih Akin
Wristcutters: A love story by Goran Dukic
Crazy by Hans-Christian Schmid
Delicatessen by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet

I think t "Le silence de Lorna"(2008) is very similar to this one.

I also love melancholic, sad, intimate romances, so I put a list of my favorites:

Sonbahar
Before The Rain
Adulthood
Auf der Anderen Seite
Boy A
Gegen die Wand
Serveuses demandées
Senki
Candy(2006)
Last Resort
Grbavica
Breaking And Entering

Hi guys,

Firstly I'd just like to thank you for the suggestions and for taking the time to reply. Some of the films you mentioned I have seen, and some not yet - but I think they're nearly all excellent.

Cashback is a different tone really. Off-Beat is thoroughly tragic while Cashback is oftentimes hilarious. I liked it quite a lot but I was more after films that would break my heart and reduce me to tears than ones that would have me laughing out loud :).

I didn't like Lorna's Silence too much, and while The Edge of Heaven, Head On, and Candy are quite good I feel there's something missing. I don't want to take away from any of the aforementioned films, but I found I was in no way so effusively emotional from the viewing of any of them as I was with Off-Beat. I think there is something quite particular about the isolation of Off-Beat, and perhaps even with the relative quietude with which the characters display their fragility. Overall, there is a poetry about Off-Beat which is rarely replicated. An emotive soundtrack helps greatly too, it must be said.

There is one film I really want to mention which had a very similar effect on me to Off-Beat though, so I'd recommend seeing it if you haven't already. It's The Princess & The Warrior (Tom Tykwer)[ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0203632/ ]. I find these two films to be very similar indeed, and I adore both. There are some moments in The Princess & The Warrior where the deep melancholy and isolation of the central character is eminently perceivable. It's another heartbreaker, for sure. I'd be interested to know your thoughts once you've seen this film, in the meantime I'm going to continue looking for films in a similar mould and re-post when I find more.

There are some movies on the above lists that I have but have not seen yet such as Wristcutters and Grbavica, so I should see them soon. If you like Candy you might like Somersault, it has a wonderful soundtrack too.

P.S. - Are you guys all completely introverted loners too? ;)

Hi there. Glad you've had the opportunity to watch some really good films that people have kindly suggested. I have watched 'Candy' and 'Somersault' and enjoyed them both very much. I've also seen 'Wristcutters: A Love Story,' watched again recently in-fact and it's one I'd definitely recommend. I agree with you on 'Cashback' and I was very pleased that they turned an 18-minute short into a 102-minute feature length film; successfully I might add. I tend to be someone who really gets these dark comedy type movies but I respect that they're not for everyone.

I've watched thousands of films and think I know the type you're after. I can't promise anything but if I can find some spare time in the near future, I could try and collate a list for you.

I'm about to watch Off Beat (Kammerflimmern) right now , and am very much looking forward to seeing what this film has to offer.
