Why Paul Made 'The Hawk is Dying'(his own words)

The science of script-picking

How do actors choose their roles? Take a lesson from Paul Giamatti, starring in two Sundance premieres.

So what was it that Julian Goldberger said to Giamatti to star in 'The Hawk Is Dying, premiering at Sundance, in which he would play an auto upholsterer trying to train a wild hawk in 100 degree heat in Gainesville?

"He showed me beautiful pictures of hawks in a book. Working with an animal like that was kind of interesting — you know, can you I tie a hawk to your arm and still act," Giamatti asked himself. "So, OK," Giamatti says, "never been to Gainesville."

Giamatti also plays a police inspector in Neil Burger's The Illusionist, starring Edward Norton as a conjurer of spirits in 1900 Vienna. The film got an enthusiastic response at its world premiere here Sunday night. "I got to smoke a pipe and wear a cool hat," Giamatti says. "And the period thing seemed intriguing — never did that before. You know these costumes — the pipe and the hat — you put that stuff on, and they do a helluva lot of the work for you." —H.J.

Gotta love him eh?
