I don't get your point, raz_mih2002.

Are you saying the Gypsies have no unique culture or anything to offer the world? Or are you saying the Gypsies fake their culture?

I enjoyed the movie very much. Especially how it showed that people from different parts of the Gypsy diaspora have a lot in common even though they are spread out over the United State, Romania, India, Spain and Macedonia.

The only thing I don't get is the USA Gypsy who said they are looked down upon. I wonder where this is since I haven't seen or met any Gypsy-American or seen any Gypsy American culture in my life and I've lived several places around the United States. Or heard anything bad about them. In fact, the Gypsy kings were very popular when I was in college. When they came to the San Francisco Bay Area, their concerts always sold out.

I've only heard Europeans say bad things about Gypsys.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

You might well have met Gypsy-Americans and just not known, seeing as many hide their heritage due to prejudice. It's a lot easier to 'pass' as something else than to deal with the misconceptions. I've heard anti-Gypsy prejudice in the US, and it's the usual stuff about stealing, fortune-telling, and Traveller work scams. Rather than seeing criminals committing crimes, the police tend to promote their belief that these are racial crimes. They say things like, "Gypsies are criminals. If they don't want to be seen as tainted by that culture, they shouldn't call themselves Gypsies."

The fact that people go to a Gypsy Kings concert doesn't have a lot to do with prejudice against Gypsies. "Those Gypsies are nice musicians, not like the usual ones." Same sort of thing that allows for venerating certain sports heroes and yet still referring to all other black people as <words that are filtered out by the IMDb>.

That's because 'proper' gypsies are no longer seen here. What we have now are bands of pikeys and assorted tinkers/travellers as shown in 'Snatch'. They keep themselves to themselves except when they're out thieving from the population closest to them, and littering their way through the countryside.

Romanies have been discriminated against for a very long time. Hitler had them on his 'to do' list, along with Jews, homosexuals and people with mental problems.

No national government likes people who have no national identity trudging backwards and forward over their borders.

Again, Romanies keep themselves to themselves, with their own language and customs. Showbiz sellouts like the Gypsy Kings have as much in common with traditional Romanies as we do.

But they do do a nice line in clay-baked hedgehogs, and I can vouch for that myself.
