anybody?????

Has anyone seen this movie? I liked the actor when I saw him in Snakeskin Man & Peach Hip Woman. Is the caracter similar? Would anyone recommend or not recommend this movie?

reply

I watched it today in the theater.
If you like Ozu or Godard then i would recommend it.
It did have a feel of both styles of theirs,
but truly was a Hou Hsiao Hsien film.

If you are asking for TOO much from the film you will be disappointed.
Other than that. It's a nice movie about something.

Asano Tadanobu is my favorite actor, and have watched over 10 films with him in so far. I loved both Cafe Lumiere and Sharkskin Man & Peach Hip Girl, but they are completely different films. Asano Tadanobu plays a quiet, mild-mannered book store owner here.

I actually prefer this film over Sharkskin Man, but if you are looking for action or comedy, this is not it. This film is very minimalistic with almost no dialogues, and is a very quiet, contemplative, and a poetic one.

Thank you.

I found this film, which I saw on a LARGE screen in Tokyo last autumn, to be sublime and profound; not only in its insights and views of Tokyo, my adopted home, but in its well-wrought rendition of one of the central anxieties of the JET AGE we inhabit. Like Yoko, who is torn between the conflicting demands of multiple places, the desire to maintain a consistent self, and various others, and Hajime, who shuns the ambiguity of place/self/time that internet/jet travel/media saturation can induce by obsessing about trains (what a metaphor), we all deal with those two options in facing our lives. This is another masterpiece, I think.

I don't get tired of repeating, this is not an Ozu movie, in any way, even if the beautifully nostalgic shochiku logo in the beggining makes you believe otherwise.
98% Hou, which may disappoint many people. I know 2 that were very disappointed, and i would perhaps be another if i didn't already go knowing what to expect.

Other than that, it's a marvellous movie, may not be such a personal Ozu homage like Kiarostami's, but is as lovelly as any of the japanese master.

i just finished watching this film half an hour ago. I'm not a big fan of HHH cos... frankly his films (though rich in subtle meanings) are a bit too slow-paced for me. I went for this film solely because Tadanobu Asano's in it, cos he's currently my favorite and i'm aiming at watching all the films he's in. If u really like Tadanobu Asano, and can appreciate his versatility in playing a diverse range of characters, plus u have a certain cultural tolerance and an open mind, then this film will be fine for u. I can't say this is one of my favorite films, but my feelings towards this film are definitely positive.

Does anybody kno Yoko's monologue when the end credits began to roll....this isnt included in the english subs..:(...what is she saying?..for such a film it seems criminal to leave out any uttered word....search online drew a big blank....

I'm pretty sure that was the spoken first verse of the song rather than Yoko's voice (the second verse is also spoken, towards the end of the credits). I don't think she says anything after stepping onto that first tram platform some 5 minutes earlier. As for whether those lyrics themselves had any special meaning in the context of the story I couldn't say.

I suppose on a clear day you can see the class struggle from here.
