So, why didn't Allison leave Joe?

He complains every time he has to pitch in a little, and thinks Allison should throw him a parade when he does.

Allison works, pretty much full-time.

Why would she leave him? He's very supportive of her "gift", he doesn't mind her leaving for various investigations at all hours of day or night, he actually does pitch in a lot throughout the series, and he just understands her. If anything, he could've been the one to leave, if he'd just had it at some point.

I am more curious at to why Joe didn't leave Alison. The poor guy never gets a whole night of good sleep ;-)

I always thought he was an extraordinarily patient guy under the circumstances. Their family life was one of my fave aspects of the show.

I completely agree, Gina. I also like their family life. And Joe sure is extraordinary patient. I know how grumpy I get if I don't get enough sleep...

I agree with all of you guys here. Joe is patient, supportive, and a great father. He puts up with a LOT of stuff from Allison.

Allison is really the one who acts exasperated, upset, and put out when the world around her frustrates her desires or plans. It is not just Joe at whom she blows up, she 'eye rolls' and snaps at everyone she knows. She displays a strange lack of understanding of anything which frustrates her plans many times. Consider her work: she nearly became a lawyer so she understands the need of the police and the A.G. office for evidence in order to arrest someone. But she often gets exasperated and acts as though she cannot understand why someone she knows is a murderer (and sometimes she interprets her dream incorrectly and is wrong) is not arrested by the police with nothing but her dream to go on.

She does the same thing with Joe. When one partner in a marriage expresses contempt for the other it does not bode well for the marriage. But Joe is generally very understanding and loving to Allison. Once in a while he has to speak up to bring her back to reality and get her to consider the demands on other people.

Allison doesn't leave Joe because she could never find another guy who is that good to her.

Their three young daughters are probably a factor that keeps them together.

Watching again, and while I still really like Joe he actually was not very supportive at all in the first two seasons. He questions her ability and sanity more than a few times, wants her to lie and pretend to be something she isn't, and gets upset when she has work to do. Several episodes reference Allison doing all the childcare before the first season, and putting off law school for his career, but when she has a good job he does seem to be upset with doing an equal share. He isn't doing it all, so it doesn't seem out of line to me that he helps with kids and dinners occasionally. If she had become an attorney her schedule would have been even worse, so I can only imagine how that would have worked out.

Maybe though he had to do all the heavy lifting. She weighed a bit for her size.

Because she knew no one else would put up with a short, dumpy, weird mom of three who whines all the time, keeps waking up all night, is paranoid and jealous of her husband — and can read your damn mind.

Oh. I mean, because she loves him. 🙄
