Why am I not surprised to learn you were a fan of "The Inside", jimguy?

Your winning streak continues.

;)

reply

Oh you again.

What can I say. I am a fan of interesting characters and great writing. I don't watch shows because they are popular.

Glad to here Peter Cotoye will be back on TV. He's a fine actor.

Have a good weekend,

Yes, ME! ::pant!pant!pant!:: Ya didn't expect to see ME again, eh Svengali!

What can I say.

How about something passive-aggressively self-aggrandizing and completely irrelevant to the show being discussed?

I am a fan of interesting characters and great writing.

Thanks, just what I was looking for.

I don't watch shows because they are popular.

It's beginning to seem like you watch them because they're the opposite of popular. Or well-written. And do you really think two-dimensional cliched cardboard characterizations are interesting?

Glad to here Peter Cotoye will be back on TV. He's a fine actor.

Good actors often end up on bad shows. And it's 'Coyote'. As in "keeps falling off cliffs, but dusts himself off and goes right back after that Roadrunner."

Have a good weekend,

I did, thanks.

You don't get it. Not everyone does, nor should they. It wasn't a show for the lowest common denominator.

How about you go out on a limb and tell me what current shows you like and why, or would that be too much to ask?

Glad to hear you had a nice weekend.
Jim

But you just did with that delightfully snarky remark--and very nicely, I might add. Not up to my standard of course, but it takes practice. ;)

Just about the lowest. I think there are some UPN shows that were lower. :-D

Man, you are in no position to chide anyone's taste. The Inside was a derivative piece of serial killer slop, stealing everything that wasn't nailed down, and doing a crap-ass job with it. I respect many of the people who worked on it, but they'll all be much better off working somewhere else.

How about you go out on a limb and tell me what current shows you like and why, or would that be too much to ask?

Deadwood
The Sopranos
Lost
Battlestar Galactica

I like them because they aren't derivative pablum like The Inside and Firefly. Because they don't pander to the pretensions of idiots. And even so, they're nothing much compared to a great movie, or a good book.

Glad to hear you had a nice weekend.

No you aren't.

;)

reply

Oh if only I could get your approval, then my life would be complete.

I wasn't trying to chide anyone else’s taste. Merely pointing out that you did not get the show. I wonder though, did you base you comments on actually having seen the show? It seems your SOP is to locate shows that have a cult following and shoot them down.

Deadwood
The Sopranos
Lost
Battlestar Galactica

Those are all quality shows, although I can't speak for Deadwood I don't have HBO in Canada.

I like them because they aren't derivative pablum like The Inside and Firefly. Because they don't pander to the pretensions of idiots. And even so, they're nothing much compared to a great movie, or a good book.

I like The Inside, and Firefly primarily because they entertain me. And they do that by providing me with interesting characters and good writing. I like the West Wing, Alias and 24 for the same reasons. You are free not to like them, or disagree with my choices, but I really think you are missing the mark with the derivative pablum comment. Personally, I don't like Bob Dylan, but I would never consider him to be a hack songwriter. The point is, I can distinguish between what I don't like and what is of poor quality. I think you have yet to learn that difference. Firefly, in particular, was highly praised for its writing by many people, including the likes of Mercedes Lackey. But maybe we're all wrong and you are right.

Casablanca, Gone with the Wind and Citizen Kane would all make lousy TV Shows. Hill Street Blues wouldn't work as short story. TV, movies, novels, epic poems, haiku, and opera all different styles, so what if what works in one doesn't work in the other?

Actually I was. I really have no desire to cultivate animosity on these boards. I extend an olive branch and get it smacked out of my hand. Oh well live and learn.

Jim

Oh I hope that isn't true. That would be so sad for you. :-(

I wasn't trying to chide anyone else’s taste. Merely pointing out that you did not get the show.

BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING TO GET. I understand what they were trying to do. I also understand, as did most critics, and nearly all viewers, that they failed miserably.

I watched several episodes, or tried to. I seem to recall that you think somebody can't decide if they like a show or not until they've watched every single episode that ever airs of it. ;)

Those are all quality shows, although I can't speak for Deadwood I don't have HBO in Canada.

Well, the first season is on DVD. It outsold Firefly's DVD by a huge margin.

I like The Inside, and Firefly primarily because they entertain me.

So? Some people like "The King of Queens" or "American Idol" because those shows entertain them. I'm not telling you or anybody else what to be entertained by. I'm just telling you to stop pretending you're watching anything more than disposable, rather ordinary entertainment, that just didn't happen to catch on. And to stop taking it personally when a show that got critically slammed, and ignored by audiences gets the axe. What on earth are you missing? What did this show do that hadn't been done better in movies you could rent on DVD anytime you wanted?

And they do that by providing me with interesting characters and good writing. I like the West Wing, Alias and 24 for the same reasons.

I used to like Alias, but that show is just dead to me now--the characters have been ruined. West Wing has had its ups and downs, but I was drawn back into it by the Santos arc. Those were much better shows than The Inside, but they could be ten times as good, and it still wouldn't be a crime against art if they were canceled.

You are free not to like them, or disagree with my choices, but I really think you are missing the mark with the derivative pablum comment.

Well, you're free to think that. But I sat there, knowing that this show was being made by people whose talents I admire, and after a short time I was shaking my head in disbelief, because it was HORRIBLE. I get this subgenre. I watched Millennium. I even watched Profiler sometimes, even though it was never much good--still twice as good as The Inside.

Personally, I don't like Bob Dylan, but I would never consider him to be a hack songwriter.

Well, that's mighty big of you. :-\

You do get that I wasn't calling any of the people working on The Inside hacks, right? Good writers can do bad work.

The point is, I can distinguish between what I don't like and what is of poor quality.

I honestly see no evidence of that. I think you and I mean different things by the word "quality".

I think you have yet to learn that difference. Firefly, in particular, was highly praised for its writing by many people, including the likes of Mercedes Lackey. But maybe we're all wrong and you are right.

What do you mean "We're all wrong"? The people who think Firefly was great constitute a tiny minority of television viewers, and most critics ranged from lukewarm to loathing about it. You're not wrong because you're the minority, but you could at least acknowledge you ARE a minority. That lots of people who love Whedon, and love space opera, HATED Firefly. We didn't cancel it. We just didn't watch it, because it held no appeal for us. We didn't reject it for any reason other than that we found the premise and the characters unconvincing and uninteresting.

Casablanca, Gone with the Wind and Citizen Kane would all make lousy TV Shows.

There actually was a TV show based on Casablanca, you know. It was pretty lousy, or so I've heard, but beside the point much? ;)

Hill Street Blues wouldn't work as short story. TV, movies, novels, epic poems, haiku, and opera all different styles, so what if what works in one doesn't work in the other?

Or in the case of Firefly, something that doesn't work in ANY medium.

And jimguy, do you think maybe we can just stop with the personal remarks? I'm honestly not interested in what kind of a weekend you had. And you are just coming across as insincere when you pretend you care what kind of weekend I had. I went out and did stuff. I hope you did the same. Nuff said.

Olive branch? Are we at war?

Seems to me the war is over.

Why is it that people who disagree can no longer be civil to one another let alone friendly? What a shame really.

Olive branch? Are we at war?

Seems to me the war is over.

That’s what I thought until you showed up here and took a few pot shots. Silly me I responded. I have no interest in rehashing our old arguments regarding Firefly or reliving them with The Inside. To be honest I am just tired of handing your ass to you. But go ahead claim victory, claim superiority. Whatever makes you feel good about your self you go right ahead and do.

And good luck with that.

Jim

Well my days of not takin' you seriously are certainly comin' to a middle.

And after the way you behaved over at the Serenity forum, you SHOULD be ashamed jimguy. How fast is your nose growing right now? (g)

That’s what I thought until you showed up here and took a few pot shots.

And volunteered relevant information you didn't seem to have yet. I was curious to see how many people thought it was such a crying shame this tacky flop show had been canceled--not that many, it seems. I noticed your name. Perhaps I shouldn't have said anything. It's not as if anything anybody says here matters a damn. I guess I felt vindicated--you think Firefly was genius, and now I see you think the same of The Inside. And honestly, man--you need to raise the bar about a parsec.

I was also curious to see how long you'd stick it out, fano-a-fano against me, without your Firefly posse to back you up, and declare you the victor after I eviscerated your shoddy arguments.

Question answered. ;)

Silly me I responded.

Silly you are, but that's not the reason.

To be honest I am just tired of handing your ass to you.

If you were into being honest, you'd ask me to stop handing you yours.

But go ahead claim victory, claim superiority.

And while I'm about it, I'll brag about having more advanced brain functions than your average mollusc. :-|

Whatever makes you feel good about your self you go right ahead and do.

Sure, I'll read the Serenity box office returns when they're out.

;)

reply

I think you are getting me confused with someone else, but whatever.

If it makes you happy, yours is the superior intellect. Your mind towers God like over all mollusks, and your flatulence smells like fresh baked bread.

Whedon is dead. Clyons is my master now. In all cases I will substitute his judgment for my own. I will rush out any buy DVD sets of all the television shows that sold better than Firefly because they must be better shows.

I will watch The Inside tomorrow, marvel at how bad it is and flagellate myself for ever liking it in the first place. I realize now, that despite being different than anything else on TV it is derivative pablum. Just like Firefly, a show that stole shamelessly from every other Sci-Fi-Western about a band of thieves and mercenaries traveling planet to planet trying to make a buck.

I realize that the character of Virgil ‘Web’ Webster is a cardboard cutout, a shallow imitation of any commanding officer of any cop show in history. I will go home and watch my Firefly DVD’s one last time so I can truly appreciate how all the dialog I thought was clever and witty is actually flat and devoid of nuance.

Come the weekend of September 30 I will wait until box office results are in to decide what movie to see because that is how quality is measured.

I’m bored with you now.

Jim

Well my days of not takin' you seriously are certainly comin' to a middle.

You seem to think "ignoring" someone means that you keep typing up long boring and unbelievably pompous responses to them. :-|

If it makes you happy, yours is the superior intellect. Your mind towers God like over all mollusks, and your flatulence smells like fresh baked bread.

Oooh, a FART joke! Always the high road, eh jimguy? :-D

Whedon is dead.

Oh geez, are we talking about him again? I really don't care about him, you know. He may still have a career, once he stops obsessing over Fireflop.

I will watch The Inside tomorrow,

Um--you do realize FOX is showing "So You Think You Can Dance" and "Bernie Mac" tonight, right?

I realize that the character of Virgil ‘Web’ Webster is a cardboard cutout, a shallow imitation of any commanding officer of any cop show in history.

I think what you need to realize is that he's a crappy character, yeah. Pompous, predictable, and poorly motivated. Coyote is fine--the character isn't. But say this--I'd rather watch him than the blah blonde blandness of Rachel Nichols. Or the robotic Adam Baldwin.

I will go home and watch my Firefly DVD’s one last time so I can truly appreciate how all the dialog I thought was clever and witty is actually flat and devoid of nuance.

Yeah, and the use of sarcasm is almost as lame as yours. ;)

Come the weekend of September 30 I will wait until box office results are in to decide what movie to see because that is how quality is measured.

Actually, that's precisely what you'll say if the box office is good.

I’m bored with you now.

It shows.

:-D

reply

This is precisely what I mean. I never said I was ignoring you. I have on occasion called you boring, feckless, pretentious and a windbag, but I never said I was ignoring you.

Maybe I should

Um--you do realize FOX is showing "So You Think You Can Dance" and "Bernie Mac" tonight, right?

That may be true, but luckily I live in Canada and The Inside will be airing on Canadian TV tonight.

Actually, that's precisely what you'll say if the box office is good.

I have never said that box office results = quality, although on occasion the two meet.

Jim

No, you just keep saying you're bored with me, and then you type up another essay that ends up proving the exact opposite of what you want it to. :-D

Maybe I should

Maybe you CAN'T.

That may be true, but luckily I live in Canada and The Inside will be airing on Canadian TV tonight.

Well, my generally good opinion of Canada will probably survive that revelation.

Now let's see how long your next response will be.

If you think you're in a position to call me "longwinded", you've got no sense of proportion. Or humor.

;)

reply

Wrong again. I said you were a windbag, not longwinded. Not the same. q.v.

It is refreshing that you don’t dispute being feckless and pretentious. Good on ya.

Jim

Well my days of not takin' you seriously are certainly comin' to a middle.

reply

So by all means feel free to take it--perhaps you can explain the difference between a windbag and somebody who is longwinded? Feel free to refer to scholarly sources to enlighten us to the nature of this deeply important distinction.

Feckless I surely am.

Pretentious? I must cede that ground to you.

And your days of takin' me seriously clearly have no end in sight.

But I digress--the last word. You need it. You crave it. It is yours. The very prestigious and busy IMDb forum for the hit FOX series "The Inside" I now relinquish forever. Victory is yours.

Well, the last word is yours, anyway. Oh, let's not be stingy. Take as many words as you need. Just try to spell them correctly, won't you?

:-D

Editing this in--I read your response--still giving you the last word, you see--but man--did you really HAVE to prove me THAT right, jimguy?

reply

So by all means feel free to take it--perhaps you can explain the difference between a windbag and somebody who is longwinded? Feel free to refer to scholarly sources to enlighten us to the nature of this deeply important distinction.

And I thought you worked in a library. Don't you have access to a dictionary?

From dictionary.com:

wind•bag n.

1) The flexible air-filled chamber of a bagpipe or similar instrument.
2) Slang. A talkative person who communicates nothing of substance or interest.

long-wind•ed adj.

1) Wearisomely verbose: a long-winded speaker. See Synonyms at wordy.
2 )Able to maintain breathing power during exertion: a long-winded swimmer.
(emphasis mine)

I may not be the best at spelling, but I do know the meaning of words.
But you never were very good at discerning depth or meaning. It was all about broad shallow strokes for you.

Jim

Well my days of not takin' you seriously are certainly comin' to a middle.

I like this Jim guy!

Rachel Nichols on Alias??? I LIKE IT! I hope she is given as much screen time as the rest of the APO gang. It's really a shame about The Inside being cancelled (not surprising coming from Fox), but at least Nichols got a new great gig.

reply

She also just ended a season-long gig on One Tree Hill.
She was VERY different in that show, but good.
It's season 4(i think.) Whatever one ended last year.
