Movies similar to this one?

Hi all!
Since I really like this movie I would be glad if you could give me a few suggestions of which movie resembles this one - Not in plot but in the way it keeps you smiling all through the film. I believe endearing is the word I'm looking for.

Cheers!

That's a hard one. The closest I can think of right now is a Chinese movie called Not One Less. In a very different way, the central character is rather gormless but somehow also persistent and, yes, endearing. It has superb photography and some wonderful amateur acting as well.

Slightly more like World's Fastest Indian could be Spider and Rose. Ruth Cracknell plays an eccentric character in her own eccentric manner. Maybe not as continuously rib-tickling as Burt, but quite endearing in her way.

And now for something completely different, but it really kept me smiling: Miyazaki's early animation, My Neighbour Totoro. (Use the subtitles, not the English soundtrack.)

All very different movies, but they're all at least something like what you asked and of course, YMMV.

Another film in which the helpfulness of others aids the lead character in reaching a goal is "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness", starring Ingrid Bergman. She has a seemingly impossible dream: to do missionary work in China though she has no formal education/training. Yet, she never gives up, and people who might not usually offer help and guidance do because she IS endearing~independent yet open to those she meets. The film is based on a true story.

I absolutely agree with "My Neighbor Totoro" (subtitled). Another of Miyazaki's films in which a character is helped along her way is the fascinating "Spirited Away". Miyazaki excels with this theme, which also is apparent in "Howl's Moving Castle".

Two films that gave me similar smiley feelings, and show what a wonderfully helpful place the world is most of the time:
Bombon el Perro.
Historias Minimas.

both by Carlos Sorin, in Spanish with US-English subtitles.

Watch them first, noting how the main characters are acted, then read how Sorin casts his films. Wonderfully brilliant!
And superb music as well.

I would check out "The Dish", which deals with a small town in Australia whose radio telescope played an important role in the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing. Although it's more of a comedy than "Indian", I always get the same major lump in my throat when I see it. Enjoy!

I love the Dish! Great movie.

INTO THE WILD! omg, what are you doing? I don't do "spoilers" so all I can say is that although I.T.W is an awesome movie? it absolutely is not one that will have a person "smiling all the way through" , and I am by no means putting down that movie, just saying that you could really hurt someone emotionally if they were to start watching into the wild expecting it to be like the world's fastest indian haha

In a thousand years, there will be no men and women, just wankers, and that's fine by me.

Into The Wild is similar movie, while watching TWFI this movie came to my mind too, at least Burt's travelling, except ending is ITW similar optimistic movie.

Hi, I'm really suprised that no one has mentioned David Lynch's film "The Straight Story", which is another gentle and uplifting drama about a likable aged eccentric making a long journey; in this case on a lawnmower to visit an ill relative.

I second the recommendation of "The Straight Story" - I was reminded of it several times while watching "The World's Fastest Indian", particularly all the people who responded so kindly to the main characters trials and moments of distress ... very similar to "Straight."

The Straight Story was the first and only film I thought of when watching this film!

Next thing they'll be breeding us like cattle. You've gotta tell them. SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!

Agree, The Straight Story is what this movie reminded me of, except Straight Story is much, much better, jmo

I think "Forest Gump" and "Burt Munro"
both share sort of the same optimistic, maybe a little naive way of
looking at the world and the people around them,
and always approaching things with an open mind.

Wonderful movies, both of 'em.

What do you mean, funny? Funny how?

I disagree. While Forest Gump is genuinely naive, Burt Munro is optimistic but not naive, although he does pretend to be at certain points in the movie.

Check out 'The Motorcyle Diaries' filmed in Argentina showing Che Gevara and a friend setting out to cross South America on an old 500cc Norton (ES2 I think) In Spanish with sub-titles but this does not detract. Enjoy - the scenery is worth it alone !

Into the Wild comes to mind.

The Astronaut Farmer ,Billy Bob Thornton was a NASA astronaut forced to retire years earlier so he could save his family farm, he never gave up his dream of space travel and looks to build his own rocket, despite the government's threats to stop him. I liked this film and thought it was quite similar

The movie has a similar vibe for me as Into The Wild. Mainly the whole main character meeting a bunch of interesting people during their journey.

I 2nd "the dish" great film, i think coincidentally has a Anthony hopkins cameo in it too.

Another good Aussie film that reminds me of World's Fastest Indian is "Kenny"
I think it has to do with Kenny's personality and being forward and honest. It's definitely more of a comedy. The first time I saw Kenny it was about 5 minutes into it...I thought it was a documentary...lol
