This is one of the few films where everything does not come to the viewer pre - digested.

Bill Murray is bland and glum precisely because he is a blank slate onto whom you can project your own feelings!

You can decide what each encounter means, you can decide what the clues mean, why the letters are pink, whybthe visiting cards are pink or blue, why the dog is called Winston, what the point of Winston himself is, what the point of Michelle Pepe is. You can decide what the cat thinks - much like the
animal communicator does - and so on.

You can decide who the son is, or if there is a son in the first place (' for all I know you wrote this yourself' says Bill at the end )
