why do all VG-turned-movies suck so much?

ie. this one, DOA, streetfighter/chunli, etc.

Due to the filmmakers/studios having no respect for these IPs.

Cause people take them way too serious. From the producers to the audience.

Did you really see a future with her?
Like, with jet packs.

They try to appeal to non-fans of the games, as well as the fans. They can't have it both ways.

The very few times that a movie based on a game didn't suck was that Resident Evil movie with Claire and Leon, and that FF7 movie. But they botched the dub for Advent Children up so bad, as well as the subtitles that the official release is unwatchable. :(

I agree, they should stop trying to appeal to the non-fans when it's based on something that already has a fan base. The Scott Pilgrim movie seemed to do it right to me, it was obvious that the movie was made for the fans and geeks. If you didn't get it then that movie wasn't for you.

Something tells me the people of earth are gonna need me.

because they are live action. and most people just WANT them to be live action for some reason

Step Up 3-D received a PG-13 rating for "brief strong language and intense dance sequences."

I love how you group doa and chun li into the same category... It's like comparing Charlie's angels and sucker punch one is meant to be mainly silly action and the other is more serious and dark. Tekken was great, the heroes journey in a futuristic setting and some great choreography, acting and visual design. It's the best video game movie adaptation, an 8/10 in my books.

Barely.
Stealing names from the game doesn't make this film an adaptation.

why do all VG-turned-movies suck so much? Think man. You have to somehow make a full movie from a frigging video game! A writers nightmare.
!

reply

VG-turned-movies "suck" because people want direct live action copies of VGs. But writers/directors never do that.

I'm not a VG geek so most movies are ok to me. Including this one.

reply

Because fanboys compare it directly to a video game rather than watching it just as a movie on its own.

In most cases, writers seem as though they don't even care about the source they are writing from, and feel as though the appeal of "this character" in the video game could be included here just to get non-fans attention. For example, DOA: -People immediately identify Kasumi, Ayane, and Hayabusa when it comes to this series. I guess Christie counts too.
-Hayate gets the wild card because he is related to Kasumi.
-You can't have a DOA story without Helena, since she is the center of all of it in the video games, and the ninjas are involved in that story.
-Tina, Bass, and Zack are merely American representations, so that was an easy score for the writers.
-And then you have everyone else (Bayman, Jann Lee, Leon, Lei-Fang, Hitomi, Brad Wong) who are not as popular from the masses, nor do they connect to the story distinctly, so the writers felt as though they should be cameos, like any other fighting game movie would do. Such a shame that Hitomi was so misrepresented though, because even she is quite popular, too. The only female who sadly isn't as popular as the rest is Lei-Fang. Lisa too, but she was never included.

I remember the first Mortal Kombat being really close to the videogame. I even liked how some of the fight scenes were just like the ones from the game. Like the Johnny Case and Scorpion fight scene which was just fvcking awesome back when I saw it in the theatres.

Is it OK to steal names of copyrighted characters with little to no semblance to the games?
Assassin's Creed and The Last of Us might actually resemble the games.
The story per se is average.

reply

It sucks because most filmmakers don't understand the game at all. They've never played it, and honestly couldn't care less.
First and foremost, they see it as a money making opportunity.
Second of all The filmmakers want to be the one in control. Rather than follow someone else's storyline, they would rather create their own. It allows them more creativity and control over their project.
