I don't get it....

Why are people freaking out about this movie left and right?

Last night, before I watched it, I read a bunch of comments here and from that formed a vague opinion of what I thought I was about to see. I was dead curious, but I braced myself for an uncomfortable, assaulting, exploiting experience.

And what I actually saw was the total polar opposite.

I saw a beautiful, magical, and somewhat bittersweet love story between two people who were just obsessed with each other, for their minds AND their bodies. Every scene, no matter how visually explicit, just screamed "LOVE!", and not "PORN!"

See, there are some main differences between this and porn:

-A standard porn plot, even when it tries to get creative, consists of two people having a steamy, many times cheesy superficial one night stand, they don't give a crap about each other besides their bodily pleasure. No emotion, no heart, just straight sex. This, for the reasons I mentioned above, was completely different from that.

-Women in porn are always treated as sex toys for the man's pleasure primarily. In contrast, Matt treated Lisa like a goddess and generally wanted her to feel great because he loved her. He complied to her every need specifically, and in the most controversial scene, she did the same.

-Instead of an alienating experience, it felt almost like a meditative experience. Watching the day-by-day progression of their relationship, undiminished and un-censored, showed just how beautiful real sex and love could be, and was a nice escape from our loud, constantly distracting media to be in their quiet and passionate little bubble for an extended period of time. Yes, I thought it did get a little too boring after a while, but I was still interested enough to keep watching.

-And most of all, unlike porn, I was actually engaged in the movie throughout without ever feeling the need to "get off" on it.

Some of the people who not only scream and cry foul about the content of this movie but also try to shame and guilt the actors, mainly Margo, for participating in it, are a lot like the over-sensitive, sexually repressed people who thought that Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction was Armageddon. The same people who can't tell natural nudity from sexually portrayed nudity, also can't see the difference between real sex and fake, exploitative porn.

Sex is NOT evil, and it's not somehow "degrading to society", so stop acting like if you watch sex in a mainstream movie, your hair will light on fire and your face will melt off your skull. Grow up.

~Dear diary, why does no one understand me? PS, I am NOT mad.
