I walked out

it was unbearable not because of any alleged emotional tonnage; it was unbearable because it was heavy-handed (that's an understatement), manipulative, uninspired. There's such lack of self-awareness (yet full of self-importance - you sense ostensibly Schloendorff takes *himself* sooo seriously) it borders on condescension and falls into annoyance. The characters become caricatures. It amazes me how you can take such a subject matter and make it so embarrassingly cliche and simpleton. And it's technically subpar.

Do you feel like giving any evidence for these views, or did you walk out before you actually had a chance to see enough of it to get a feel for the film? If you would have seen the whole film I doubt you would have felt it was so "heavy-handed" as you say. What gave you the notion that Schloendorff thinks so highly of himself? Did you go into this movie with preconceived notions of what it was going to be? Do you have some grudge against someone who attempts to tackle a difficult history through the challenging medium of film? I hope not. Maybe you should go back and watch the film. Your comments aren't of any real value until you've seen the film, but thanks!

Evidence? It's how he subjectively judged the film. What would be evidence of that beyond stating how one felt about the film?

Is everyone in this house a total nutzoid or is it just me?

To the poster who asked, perhaps rhetorically, 'What Evidence...he was just stating his subjective views' I respond 'Quid quid gratis assertor gratis negatur' (that that is freely asserted is freely denied) If you have no foundation for you views, subjective or otherwise, you forfeit intellectual credibility, if you truly care about such "jejune" things. I don't like Hamlet...no reasons, just my feelings. Very New Age thinking, just gainsay something you don't like and it's concluded. Debate is proscribed, discussion is irrelevant and critical thinking is summarily dismissed. Beyond pathetic. Is this the legacy of western thought, from Aristotle to Gilson? See how absurd this non-thinking approach sounds when it is applied to you, even as an example. "I think you are a certified ignoramus." No evidence, just my subjective thought...sleep on that and see how foolish your approach really is when presented in its simplest form. Even the rather caustic critic of the film offered a foundation for his/her views, and rather well presented at that. Lepanto

I agree. Not the greatest movie I've seen about that time period.

Wow. I thought the characters had plenty of dimension. Gebhart was pretty compelling as a Nazi with moral conviction. Kremer put in a very difficult position and responded with a very difficult solution. I don't see the cliche. It's hard to understand how much more a person would need to be satisfied with the movie.

I'm with you ... I thought they were both great!
