[[Spoilers] Quite an ordinary film. Nothing really special.

I went into this film not knowing anything about it, other than it starred Jeff Fahey and some local British actors I quite liked. But what irritated me was having this stupid American detective in there that seemed to serve no purpose at all other than to be another token American necessary for the film to market okay in the US. He didn't add anything to the story other than to make you grit your teeth at the horrendous acting and onscreen personality he portrayed.

Admittedly it did have a good twist at the end - which is a real bonus for a formulae driven hollywood production - I can genuinely say I didn't see it coming right up until the very last part of the film when they pull all the evidence together. But the demise of the bad guy didn't fit with the rest of the film. In some ways I was left wondering if maybe the director couldn't make up his mind about whether he was making a thriller or a ghost story. Which did have an impact on the rest of the film with respect to how the story unfolded.

In the end, I think this could have been done a lot better with some essential script changes, a tighter storyline (make one or the other, but not half and half), and a couple of cast changes; namely the removing of the American detective who does nothing to add to the story at all.

I agree with you about the American detective. I thought he was dumb too, and as I said in my review elsewhere on the Messages IMDb site, it made no sense, not just because the guy is a jerk but because England has plenty of experts on serial killers.

As for the twist at the end...ah, but the killer does fit the profile of a serial killer. I can't say why because that would be a spoiler. So yes, it is hard to see it coming for most people but it makes sense in terms of forensic psychology.

I think you have made some other good points and I tend to agree with you about the director not making up his mind about what he was trying to do. But in spite of the flaws, I enjoyed the film and found it quite suspenseful.

And of course, having Bruce Payne in the cast added immensely to it, IMO.

We liked it better than you did, padwanna. It's got its faults but overall we thought it was suspenseful and interesting.

Israfel for Bruce's Angels.
