Plot/character issues?

So at the end of the movie Selma Blair melts the crown which then apparently destroys the Golden Army. If destroying the crown was a possibility, why didn't they just destroy one of the pieces they had? Selma Blair didn't even need to use blue flames to do it. Just some regular ol' fire.

Also, Abe gave the Prince the crown because he didn't want the Prince to kill the Princess. But Abe's the one who figured out the Prince CAN'T kill the Princess without committing suicide (which the Prince clearly was not up for before taking the crown).

Last, I get why they didn't bring back Myers, he doesn't fit in this story. This movie is about mystical forest elf/troll people, not inter-dimensional Rasputins and demon monsters. Plus, Myers is probably more of a product of studio intervention. But he fit in the first movie nonetheless.

Even if we didn't enjoy watching him, Myers was introduced as Father's pick to watch over his beloved son. Myers meant a lot in terms of Red's relationship with Father. Plus, Red's character arc was nearly entirely motivated by Father.

So it's frustrating when the 2nd movie opens up with a joke about how Hellboy got jealous and shipped his surrogate brother to Antarctica. Plus, John Hurt returns as Father in an almost meaningless role, with a flashback for some callback punchline service in the 3rd act.

To nitpick, Father shouldn't have even been played by John Hurt for that time period anyway, they had a young version of the character already well-represented in Hellboy I.

But if you have the opportunity to feature John Hurt in your movie, why wouldn't you? The man is a living legend!

Your point about Liz destroying the crown piece is a good one though. I can't believe I've never thought of that!
