why do yanks see a whole continent as one place

i mean come on..europe is more than one country

but england, germany, spain, italy, all the scandinavian countries, the eastern european countries etc etc and we are all narrowed down to being one europe

reply

It might have something to do with the European Union.

reply

Why do Europeans refer to all Americans as Yanks? Northeasternern Americans are the Yanks.

reply

Whatever you are to each other, your ALL Yanks to the rest of the world :-p

reply

Haha, I think that answers the original question. When looking at a geographic land mass on the other side of an ocean, we tend to group everyone into one category. If you want to be recognized as a distinct & sovereign entity, you need an ocean around you. Like England or Japan.

reply

Well, They do exactly the same with Latin America or worse...

reply

Yes, we Southamericans have lots of differences among us: culturally, racially, climates, etc...we are only united through our great language...SPANISH !!!

reply

I'm an American who has lived in Europe and I can kinda see both sides to this. I think a lot of Americans who don't travel see Europe as foreign, but really pretty similar, at least culturally.

However, I don't believe that we consider the whole continent as one big culture and one big country. I just don't see any evidence for that talking to people I know.

I think cgreen-3 has a better case to make. I speak Spanish and study the culture and Americans really do group all of the Latin American countries together way too much. Anytime the average American hears Spanish he or she probably thinks "Mexico!" It's pretty ridiculous.

The same reason you see "Eastern Europe" as one place.
