What does it signify?

I read somewhere that it's based on some old tale. Can anyone explain?

In my opinion, I think that's a metaphor who show us that our life and actions are predestined by someone else in a parallel space. But it's just a thought.

reply

That's a cool interpretation...parallel dimension I think you meant?

"Ever danced with the devil in the pale moonlight"

reply

Yes! Thank you :P

I saw it quote differently. This may sound kinda strange but hang in their with me. I'd imagine that people who try to commit suicide often have to build up enough courage to through with the act, but once they do that, the person would have come to his senses but it was too late to do anything.

With doodlebug, I feel it's the story of the fragility if the human existence and how we spend our whole lives building up to the moment that will eventual kill us. And once we reach that stage, it's too late to change it but we understand and regret the actions undertaken throughout our lives.

I told ya it was a bit weird

according to some comments ive read on youtube some people say its about there always being something better than you. for example a spider can catch a fly, but a bird can catch the spider, and so on.

the early bird catches the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese

reply

Personally, it felt very Kafkaesque. Thus, could it signify alienation or how powerless we are compared to stronger beings/institutions? I don't know, one would have to ask Nolan to be sure.

reply

That's also an interesting interpretation. Reminds me of Zeitgeist's criticism of the monetary system.

This is interesting because in Doodlebug, the lesser character overpowered by the larger one is always oblivious to what's hit him, which sort of reflects our socially conditioned minds whilst powerful corporations are hurting us without our conscious awareness.

reply

Very interesting interpretations by you guys, great job, they relly illuminated the symbology of the film to me. well done.

reply

Seriously, you all came up with these elaborate interpretations for this 3 minute clip? It reminds me of something that would be shown in Psych 101 - paranoid schizophrenic trying to kill a bug.

reply

I think it is about a man who is bugged by his future and wants to get rid of that tension, as in this film the bug does things a step before the bugged one.

except for 1 hater who just wants attention this is a very insightful thread some great ideas and interpretations on here thank you all.

reply

He's a hater who wants attention for posting what he thinks? Well that's not a silly and generic thing to say at all.

One of my interpretations is very similar to yours. I saw the whole thing as a suicide.

reply

I viewed it as a story of a character whose existence is basically structured like a fractal. Whatever happens in life is mirrored in a similar pattern at a macroscopic large-scale level.

reply

Awesome interpretations guys. I thought it was about how anytime we see something we don't understand, something we don't no the limitations of, we're always scared of it, we try to destroy, we assume it an enemy before any real investigation

reply

@MJ 882 & mycatpwns thank you for your great interpretations! Question: If you could ask Christopher Nolan one question, what would it be? I may get chance to interview him later today and I wanted to get a question from the fans POV. Thanks!

reply

My question would be How did you come up with the idea of Inception and the concept of being conscious in a dream within a dream and so on?. Thanks, take care

Well, Christopher Nolan himself said that he isn't really sure as where he got the idea for Inception.
However, many people have spoted the striking similarities with the Donald Duck comic book called 'The Dream of a Lifetime'.
It was written by Don Rosa in 2002, and published in 2004 (8-6 years before Inception).
The similarities are many - dream within a dream, Mal (the female antagonist), staling the combination of a vault, and many, many more.

in mi opinion it is a metaphor to a kind of extrema metaphisical metaphor that says that there are endless universes much smaller than ours in a sub atomic scale, and that there are endless universes bigger than ours. Keep in mind that we only observe 3 of the total of 11 dimenssions, so who knows what is really reality? Well its quantum phisics and metaphisical theories and so on, noone really knows but i think he had some of that in mind.

ps:sorry bad grammar, english is not mi native language

reply

I assume it's got something to do with 'every action has an equal and opposite reaction'.
