Brilliant

This has to be the best thing on TV in years. Bloody fantastic.

The Royal Television Society Recently nominated Michael Sheen (Mark) for best Male Actor for his work in Dirty Filthy Love, which has also been nominated for best Single Drama (2004).

reply

Shirley Henderson has been nominated for Best Female Actor as well. Pardon the initial omission.

reply

I rented this film because Shirley Henderson (whose work I love) was in it. I had not seen Michael Sheen before, but he had the same kind of impact as Geoffrey Rush did in "Shine."

It was a wonderful film.

It was amazing i wish they would repeat it on TV but they only seem to repeat the s#*t stuff

I just saw this last night. I had no idea who Michael Sheen was until I came to imdb.com and saw that he played "Lucien" in the "Underworld" films and played "Robbie" in "Wilde" which are in their own rights, remarkable films. And like those two, I can now add "Dirty Filthy Love." What an extraordinary film. It left me absolutely breathless. Remarkable, brilliant performances by Michael Sheen and Shirley Henderson, who I knew only from her small parts in the harry potter films and Bridget Jones's Diary. You really come to understand how people, who are tenuously holding on to some semblance of a life, are dealt with a circumstance (in this case, when Mark's estranged wife, Stevie, visits him for a night and then abandons him) which sends them reeling over the edge. This would never have made it to American network television and thank goodness for IFC (the Independent Film Channel) and cable television.

Well if you can find it at your local video rental store, it's worth it. I just can't say enough about it. It is difficult to take at times, but I think that's what makes it so brilliant. And nowhere in there did I notice the filmmakers take the easy way out of spicific situations. I won't spoil it, but there are some things you expect to happen or not to happen & then when they do or don't depending it just makes it even better.

I'll warn you, there are times it gets intense, one scene specifically that's almost too much for even me. But then there are the scenes that make you want to watch it again & again. Just e-mail me if you want to know more about it. I'll do my best not to spoil it.

For me it was the bathing scenes.

Great film. Very moving, especially the classical music juxtaposed with the lead character's pain.

I have to agree with everyone who loved this film! I watched it last night on IFC. The movie made me laugh, cry, and think about how our society deals with people who may have these disorders. There was one part that was a very tense moment for me to watch, I almost changed the channel. But I trudged through, and am glad that I did. Michael Sheen was excellent, I knew I had seen him before in another movie, and as I read in an earlier post he was in the film "Underworld". I can't say enough great things about this film. It was wonderful!

Sadly, I don't think that a television adaptation of this film will be made for American TV, but it was readily available at the video store I go to - I don't know if Hollywood Video is a national chain or not (I'm in Wisconsin) but that's where I got it from. I'm addicted to all that is Sundance so it caught my eye. In my immediate family, three of the four of us (my mom is the 'normal' one and she's the one that watched it with me) has a serious mental illness, so although I don't have Tourette's, I do have OCD among other things so I appreciated the movie more than my mother did. Mark was a jerk about some things, but speaking as a mentally ill person surrounded by both the affected and the unaffected, I well know the difference between actions borne of illness, bad behaviour, and ignorance. Mark had a mixture going on. His wife was totally damaging to him - reckless to the point of danger. I really hated her saner-than-thou attitude. Hated her in general. While I saw the sadness in the movie, I have practically lived some of it so it didn't affect me so much where I didn't see the humor in the film. Noir, yes, but funny as hell just the same. You can't tell me that you didn't laugh when he explained to his best friend why he doesn't like sitting in chairs! LOL However, I have been told that I have a very dark sense of humor in the first place, so perhaps it's just me. My mom (who usually watches strictly Hollywood stuff) cried and didn't see the humor much. I thought that the ending was realistic - everybody was still pretty screwed up and had problems, but things had progressed and changed quite a bit beginning to end. I think I just responded to everything everyone said on this board...sorry I can get a bit carried away when it comes to talking about certain things.

Just adding to the praise. Rented it on a lark, and can't say enough about this affecting and affirming film. Reminds me of Vanity Fair's review of Lolita, "The only convincing love story of our century." It also reminds me of Benny and Joon, but Mr. Sheen's performance puts those to shame, as much as I liked them. Some movies you feel if everyone in the world saw the world might be gentler for a night. I imagine this is one.

Silly, but looking back, the only bit I thought rang false was Stevie's over the top dialogue at the end...the least of reasons not to see the film.

Please go and enjoy it. And thanks for the recommendations all!

I can't believe this movie was made for TV. It's fantastic! Michael Sheen and Shirley Henderson makes this movie a unique experience thanks to their excellent acting.

PS: I never heard about "Tourette's syndrome" until I watched this movie, but I know a person who suffers from a quite similar disease. Not sure if it's the same disease that Mark suffers, but his behaviour is quite similar.

Great stuff. 8/10

Can someone tell me about the intense scenes? I'm curious...just put a spoiler warning for those who don't want it spoiled.

Amanda,

I wondered what other people found intense, too. Here is a description of the most intense scene to me:

Mark gets into a very emotional state and goes into his compulsion about stepping in dog droppings. When his friends come home, they see a trail of newspapers Mark has placed on the floor. They follow it to the kitchen to find him perched like a bird, naked, in the kitchen sink. He has burned the flesh on his feet with his compulsive cleaning. His friends tend his feet, but this act is too much for them, and Mark is forced to find his own place; from that point, he really sinks into his illness.

Cheers,

Laura
