Poorly executed and utterly boring !

Following the career of Vincent Cassel for some time, this must be the most dissapointing movie he ever made, apart from 'Renegade/Blueberry' and 'Le Pacte des Loups'. To no fault of him, I may add, cause the script, the editing and the directing might have been in better hands with a couple of monkeys.

I think Cassel is in far better hands on the set of Black Swan.

Completely agree.

And I have to disagree. I enjoyed both Public enemie movies very much. Both the storyline and the acting of Cassel and co were of a high level. Anyway tastes differ and I have never watched Black Swan. You must be kidding if you honestly believe this is his worst movie ever. The scene with the break up with his father for example is rather moving. Sure its not of the same level as 'La Haine' but in movies like 'Spybound' (with Monica Belushi) he was in worse shape than in Public enemie # 1. Vraiment!

Good to see some americans who liked it. I'm french, I have seen that movie back then cause it's getting a bit old, was surpringly amazed that it got dubbed for you guys. It's not the best movie of all times for sure, but it's still good. You have to not forget that the story is real, so you have many constraints when it is like this...
The guy was a bit over the board but there is some touching scene like with the family.

I also liked the scene when he steals a bank and is like "let's do that one too!" :)

Anybody else liked it ? We kinda suck at making action movies over here, mainly comedies... so that one is worth watching in my opinion...especially because it really did happen
There was also a second part of that movie, actually this is the second part, and the other movie talk about his youth, the war etc... not even close to be that good tho.

I'm english watching it in the original French with subtitles and I think it is utterly brilliant! Not quite finished watching though.

the first film to this 2 part film was definitely better as the pacing was much better and was a solid 8/10. this film on the other hand was a 7/10 as it seemed to drift off a little to much into random BS later into the 2nd film that sort of seemed a little out of touch compared to the first film.

what they should have done was make 1 single 2.5-3hour film and it would have been pretty much perfect.

p.s. as for the whole 'Black Swan' (6/10) thing... that film can't touch these two films, especially the first one for damn sure.

I'm english watching it in the original French with subtitles

pretty much same. i am a American. but i think movies where you need subtitles are always best watched with original audio as dubbed audio pretty much sucks as it sucks the life out of the actors in general.

so it's always best to use original language it's spoken in with subtitles for any non-english movies.

I think both parts of Mesrine are absolutely excellent, though I will admit they excel in different areas. Killer Instinct was much more character-driven, while Public Enemy #1 focused more on the action. They balanced each other out very well, I thought.

France has really come along the last decade or so in the crime genre. I don't know why people are slamming them because they "can't make action movies". I thoroughly enjoyed Mesrine, ad Cassell is an actor I follow frequently. In addition to that "A Prophet" was brilliant, and my favorite film of 2009.

They make action movies for smart people. People who don't need the spectrum to be "Michael Bay or nothing at all". France is putting out some excellent genre films, and quite frankly inthink they're doing it better than North America. I'd rank France second to South Korea when it comes to making crime movies in the last decade.

Come-on, people. French are bad in action movies?? Has anybody heard of Luc Besson?
That Mesrine 1&2 was based on a true story doesn't change the fact it was a poorly executed movie. Moreover, if the story was not good enough, they should have adapted it or never make the movie.

great pair of movies. would put them above prophet for sure.

Have to agree with you,i was really looking forward to both films but found my self willing the films to end.Especially public enemy no 1.By the way the onll reason i watched both is because i bought them together.

reply

I'll disagree as well. Big-time. I found this to be one of the most compelling films I have ever seen.
