meaning of opening scene?

i didn't really understand the very first scene - where the one guy's talking about his dad and having his first child and stuff. how does it relate to the movie?

It's because it is almost Tom's story.

Tom's friend tells him how is father got sick and he had to take care of him, making him a father figure to his own father. He tells Tom how he hated it, but that he didn't want it to end.

During the whole movie, it becomes more and more apparent that Tom is taking care of his father (finding his money, protecting him) rather than his father protecting him (like it "naturally" should be) and that, he doesn't seem to enjoy it. But even when is life has changed (a few years later), he feels the need to avenge his father by beating up Minskoff, almost coming to killing him. Tom certainly didn't want his father to die. The movie is about the unconditionnal love of a son for his father even when he apparently hates him or doesn't respect him or what he does. It's a movie about the ambiguous relationship between father and son.
