Towards the end of the film it is shown that 2 years have passed. Shortly after that we see Thomas and Miao getting in a car to drive to her performance. They seem to be a couple now. Or am I reading too much into that aspect of the ending?

Whether they are a couple now or not what i feel is that he is very much an outsider now to this music - that this is as close as he can really come now and that without her connction he'd merely be a voyeur - a Travis in the porno theatre. He seems to be her driver/manager. Just can't see that this will be enough. Fkng love this movie. So much energy in it.
shareI too think they are a couple. I think she reminded him of his mother (a musician), the calmness that surrounded his childhood with his mother and with music and that's why he ends up with her. Music calms the beast so to speak. If he hadn't been with her, he would have killed the Russian, being immersed in music and being married to a musician is changing him back to how he used to be when his mother was alive.

shareI love that they skip the whole romance and everything, too. You just cut back into their lives and she's speaking French (probably because he helped teach her) and he's happy being her cheerleader on the sidelines at these concerts a million miles away from his former self. They are basically living *in* the happy ending when the final plot twist lands in front of him on his way there. The very last thing, that he must do. Fking brilliant. I love this movie.

Yeah, they are couple and if you ask me Thomas have good taste because Miao Lin is much prettier than Aline, plus Miao seems tender, reliable, cool etc. besides she's a musician. Which is exactly what Thomas needs.
BTW I think Thomas is Miao's manager as well. And most likely his personal french teacher
They are lovers at the end of the film, and this made me very happy.

You make a good point. There was some ambiguity there and I am sure the director wanted it that way. Do you ask your wife or girlfriend if she wants to sit in the front or back of the car? Strange indeed.
