Does anyone else hate this film as much as I do?(Probably not) *spoiler*

I absolutley hated it!!! It was more gory than it was scary. It was a total rip-off of the ring except, the ring was a phsycological thriller, this was just horrific. My advice, to whoever wrote this script is to DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE THEY MAKE A FILM!!!!!

Here is what I found wrong with it-

1)The plot was totaly confusing

2)It made Wales look totally uncivilized. Honestly, everything was just sheep and grass! At one point Sean bean hits stones together to try and light a fire. I live in Scotland, which is very close to Wales and belive it or not - we have computers, tv's, i-pods ect....Shock horror!!!!

3)The idiot of a woman says "Top o' the moring to you!"

4)THE TERRIBLE ACCENTS!

5)The woman takes a kettle up the stairs when she hears a noise.

6)Possesed sheep jumping off of a cliff!

7)The fact that it tried to justify the torture of a young girl!

8)The majority of Celts (SUCH AS MYSELF) don't belive in these myths!!!

9)It was a cheap rip-off of the Ring and other Japanese horror films!

This is just me getting started - seriously! What are your opinions? They made Celtic people look like total idiots!!! What are your opinions??

Ok- so no way I hated the movie as much as you did- but you did have some brilliant points.

So I am right with you and the rip-off theory but I want to add to it-- I felt like I was watching a college of The Ring, The Grudge, Pet Semetary, Silent Hill and crazy enough - What Dreams May Come. I thought the film was decent but all the others I mentions (except Silent Hill) were a thousand times better. Of course Silent Hill came after, but they could have played the video game!

Oh and I'm feeling you about the Wales thing, trust me, I am living in Atlanta, GA and I am always getting annoyed at movies making everyone from the south seem so stupid with that over-done southern accent!

the fact of the matter remains that its a MOVIE....for enjoyment...a story...thats the joy of moviemaking...the smallest story can be made into a feature film...It doesnt matter that the facts are twisted and that the natives dont talk a certain way or believe in myths or whatever else u named...I know that its about pride and all that stuff...but I'm african american...you dont hear me making a big deal because movies depict blacks in a certain way....OVERALL....this movie had a good plot...good back story...yes...it may be confusing but its to make u think...as moviegoers we are spoiled...its like we expect everything to be written out..thats what makes this a good movie...it leaves us to draw up our own conclusions......

NO....I digress....I hate it more!! Those points you made were hella funny though! Top of the mornin' to ya! haha!!

Anyways I thought it started off ok....the first maybe 30 - 40 minutes held promise but the last 1/2 and hour was soooo confusing. I still don't know what happened. I mean.... what the hell?! Where did they go in the end when they jump thru into the ocean?! Some alternate reality or something....cuz they're supposedly not dead! And what the hell is this shepherd guy?! Some soul keeper in the alternate reality?! And is his daughter is the assistant?! WTF?!?!?!? Arrgghh!! And what happens in the end?!?! Who is this girl?! If she is the assitant in the alternate reality how can she be the daughter too?! What is really going on? So the mother has sacrificed herself so her daughter can come back....but it's not really her daughter...it's that shepherd's daughter in disguise!! WTF?!? What's the point of the legend if it's not gonna even work properly!??! And what's gonna happen right at the end when that dumb shepherd pokes his head thru when the mother is sitting there in this alternate reality?!?! Wtf?!?! If the shepherd has become the soul keeper in this alternate reality....then shouldn't the mother now take his place!?!?

One of dumbest movies i've ever seen!

I feel sorry for Sean Bean as this is so not up to his usual standards.

i actually liked the movie. I wouldn't take offence to the depiction of celts. Those people from that area were led "astray" (get the sheep reference) by the deluded preacher. the movie was not set in Cardiff, after all.

reply

i do, i hate it maybe more then you

It was meant to be 'a few miles away' which was hilarious, more like a FEW HUNDRED AWAY! the accents were rubbish, Maria Bello didn't even attempt to pronounce anything correctly!

Mae Cymru am byth! Ac Maria Bello yn dwp iawn!

I still don't know what happened. I mean.... what the hell?

So not "getting" a movie makes it bad?

One of dumbest movies i've ever seen!

Then you haven't seen that many movies.

Hmm, you could say it resembled the US version of The Ring, but I don't see any similarity to the Japanese Ring. The horses dying, keeping the girl locked in a room up in the barn loft, the woman jumping off the cliff...those things were only in the US version, not the Japanese.

Sorry that you have not enjoyed the film, obviously it is not to everybody's taste but there is no pleasing everybody.

However, the film was very well researched.

1. The plot consisted of the mass suicide that took place fifty years previously.

2. What shock horror - the film was set before the introduction of modern technology.

3. Sorry don't remember that one.

4. Whose accent are you referring too?
James is English, Adele is American, Rowan the Minister and the children are Welsh.

Don't know about the rest but the scenery was magnificent.

Overall I enjoyed it.

Hmmm, can't say I hated it, exactly, but it is a tedious and annoying little horror VERY reminiscent of Hideo Nakata's Dark Water (Honogurai mizu no soko kara). Yay Japan.

Yvonne, I must take issue with your response, though - "the film was set before the introduction of modern technology"? Call me old-fashioned, but I would consider that car Adele and Sarah drove up in to be "modern technology".

I do relate to those irritated by some of the "wee olde Wales" stereotyping that goes on. North Americans are a jot too fond of making other countries look backward and primitive. I'm from Africa, and oddly enough we too have iPods and wireless Internet access and are not constantly tripping over antelope or being eaten by lions, as Hollywood would frequently have the viewing public believe. I also hear a rumour that dingoes and crocodiles in Australia do not live exclusively on babyflesh!

We also have grammar, which is a beautiful invention.

"Only high-powered, neurotic, castrating, Manhattan career bitches wear black. Is that what you want to be?"
"Ever since I was a little girl."

I quite liked it, and yeah it is kinda like a British made Silent Hill. But this scared me more than Silent Hill did, so there ya go.

As for the main arguments here against it:

1)Makes sense if you think about it.

2)It was in a fairly isolated part of Whales. Also, some people enjoy living a basic life, maybe James just liked living like that.

3)I really don't remember this.

4)I don't remember any particularly bad accents.

5)Not remembering that one either.

6)What's wrong with that?

7)But that's what people did in years past. Whenever they thought someone was mad or ill they would drill into the person's skull to leak the madness/illness out. It didn't justify torture, it emphasised the brutality of it.

8)You know the majority of all Celtic people do you? I'm sure there's some peopel who believe them. And the movie never claimed that a large number of Celtic people believe the myths.

9)Well, it was based on a novel, so it's not a rip-off of anything really. Also, why does a dark, atmospheric horror/ghost story that centers on a young girl instantly equal Japanese horror?
The book which this film is based on was published in 1994, a while before RINGU was made. OK, the book is a lot different to the film, but I'm sure that the basic elements of the book appear in the film.

rangergrl187 -

actually, the film is only based very loosely on the book. the protagonists share the same names....and that's about it. it was badly researched and badly edited - either the studio decided that it was too long for it's intended audience, or they just couldn't be bothered. either way, its simply another disappointment in a long line of hollywood book-to-film adaptions.

I just watched it. Absolutely horrid film.
