I thought this movie was dreradful!

Ive seen alot of movies wayyyyy more than the average person I have varied tastes and dont usually complain about a film unless its really awful even then I wouldnt go to see it in the first place. I seen this film 2 years ago and I thought it was horrific, however people liked it and i thought i must have been tired when i watched it so i siad ill watch it again. So last night I watch this movie again dear god i wouldnt give it 1/10 its total garbage. Does any1 else agree that this mite be the worst movie you have ever seen?

This is a strange, strange film, and not one that I like too much either, though I don't out and out hate it.
For one thing, I didn't care about any of the characters, which is a pretty major problem in a film this character driven. They were all a little too eccentric, like caricatures, you could hardly relate to them at all. Cillian Murphy was great though.
I havent't checked, but this was definitely based on a book, right? It felt like Jordan was sticking too close to the source material or something... I don't know, I was just never too sure what the main characters motivations were... you can tell there's some good, funny ideas going on here (the story bit near the beginning with Liam Neeson was delightful), but a lot of them must've been lost in translating it to the screen. And I'm not a huge fan of Neal Jordan anyway, his movies always feel so overhyped and melodramatic (crying game for example)

No, no. Psychopaths kill for no reason. I kill for money. It's a job. That didn't come out right.

reply

Never read the book, but from what I've heard, the two are supposedly pretty different. I do love the movie though.

I'll have to agree!! This movie had this stifling feeling to it, I just couldn't get into it at all...this confirms my utter hate for Cillian Murphy!! I thought I was wrong the first time around when I saw him in Red Eye...now I'm 100% certain I do NOT like this guy!

I wish you joy and happiness, but above all this...I wish you love ..

reply

i have to agree that i was really dissapointed with this film, however seeing this and red eye (above) you really havent seen the best of cillian, try the wind that shakes the barley, sunshine and 28 days later, theyre the BEST. watching cillian's camp performance was pretty awful

reply

Murphy's "acting" in Sunshine was pretty much absent. All he does is stare with a blank, completely unreadable look on his face for some of the most emotionally -charged moments in the film...example: four of them are stuck in the second ship and there is only ONE spacesuit. Cillian is wearing it and the captain insists that he get out and give it to him; The captain is throwing a fit and Cillian's expression is so blank, if ANYONE can tell me what he was supposedly feeling at that moment in time is a genius.

The guy is beautiful... and vapid, far too often.

HOwever, having just watched Breakfast on Pluto, I have to admit that he did a good job as Kitten... underplayed it and DID come across as a a real girl rather than a drag queen (too exaggerated usually, but that's the whole point of drag...) or some of the trans-sexuals I've known who just put on a dress but still come across as completely male.

One thing I must say though is that there is absolutely NO character development in this film... and Murphy is more or less obligated by the scrip to play the entire film on one note! He never loses his temper, he never shows fear. Which is the whole reason the film doesn't really work...it destropys teh tension... he isn't human enough to identify with. Remaining totally unfazed while being beaten up or threatened with execution just doesn't make the character believable. But that is not Murphy's fault...blame the script.

@klc-16
No character development? Unidentifiable? Never loses his temper? He loses his temper with Billy! At the part where Billy is choking him and calls him Patrick he pushes Billy away and yells "I told you to call me Kitten!" He's UPSET there.

And when the man is choking him in the car do you see how he struggles? Do you see the expression on his face? You can hear him trying to scream out!

And after he tells his story to the cops about "Deep Throat" and it shows him dancing with Lawrence when it cuts back to him in the station he's CRYING.

Not to mention the look on his face when he watches Lawrence die.

So you're wrong. Patrick DOES show fear, he DOES lose his temper and he CRIES over the death of Lawrence. If fear, anger and sadness aren't human enough of emotions for you to identify with then I'm sorry, but this movie wasn't for you.

And Patrick does change, but not in a completely obvious way so I can understand you there. I notice new things about Patrick every time I watch the movie. In the beginning he's brash, self obsessed, selfish, but by the end he learns to let go of the thought of his mother and learns to love what he has in the form of Charlie and Father Liam. I missed a lot of this my first few times watching it so I can understand if you did too. Give it another chance and try watching out for those things I've pointed out and I gurantee you will be able to more easily identify with Patrick.

I have to agree on this one. I wouldn't say completely dreadful, I got through it, but not a movie I'm gonna be telling anyone to see. It's a shame too, there are a lot of actors in this movie I really like. I can't even say there were bad performances, just lacking characters, I didn't really care for or about any of them. When all was said and done I felt a little numb... that was odd.

One thing I do have to say though is, I am glad to see some named actors are starting to play these roles. It's nice to see some strong actors playing in some risky roles and movies. Milk and Brokeback etc etc. If you don't even get to see differing lifestyles on tv or in movies, who can blame a person for being ignorant?

Jesus Christ, I'm with you on that one, man. I just hated this movie. Someone here said, that it is a movie about this transvestite guy, who's just immature, and he learns it at the end, but that's not true.
This movie is about some self-despised idiot, unprepared to live in society as they knew it back then, who doesn't know what he wants, with LACK OF ANY humane, deeper feeleings aside from overly exaggerated longing for his fairy tale's mother and at one point, lost friend. The police station, and digging the "grave" scenes prooves that. He has his life in contempt and in face of a real threat reacts as no sane human being would react.
You see, I just hate cross dressers. I don't understand them, and I don't feel the need to even try. I just don't. That is why I agree, that aside from cinematography or actor skills - which I must say, are astounding - the script is just dreadfull. I couldn't relate to any of the characters, I didn't feel any compasion, or anger, nor would I cared if he finds this mother or not. I'm just ambivalent for all of it. (I'm sorry if this isn't the correct form - English isn't my native language)
I've hated Cillian's character so much, that I had to sit out the movie only to find out if he would change. And you know what? What bloody change? He's more secure of himself, because he thinks he's more of a woman? Well, newsflash! No, he isn't! He's still a man in a friggin dick under his dress! What, because he grew up and didn't introduce himself to his mother when he had a chance? That's a step backwords. If he was proud of himself the way he was, that means he's just even more scared of it.
What change? He's still the same as he was, show him a gun now, and he would throw it into a lake like he did earlier, having no real compassion over a life of owner of the weapons. The only thing that have changed at the end of the movie, is his wardrobe taste.
Well, I can't say that I regret watching this, now at lest I know, that Cillian Murphy is a fine actor, who can convince me to actually hate a character. No, I just plain didn't like the movie.

This is one of my favorite films. I loved the book and was able to appreciate the movie even more so as a fan of the book. The acting was amazing. The soundtrack is awesome. I don't see what there is to hate so much but I understand that its not for everyone.

Just out of curiousity, what movies would you consider to be your top 5 favourite?

reply

I don't have my top favourites.
Check out my acc here, there's a history of votes and a summary I wrote, that pretty much sums up on what basis I score my movies. You'll know then. Only three 10. I think.

I do not agree at all. However your borderline illiteracy "mite" be as scary to me as this film is "dreradful" to you.
