Down syndrome Comment

the one lady is introducing her family to the camera, and when she gets to one of them shes like "This is our adopted blessing, he has down syndrome...i have always wanted a down syndrome baby" comment.

i was like...Did she just say that? who the hell says that? It was the funniest comment i have ever heard!

reply

Why is that funny? She wanted to adopt a kid with the challenge of Down's Syndrome. There are lots of special needs kids like that need a home. I think it's nice that she and her husband wanted to adopt a harder to place child.

reply

Because that is not a normal comment people make. "Iv always wanted a down syndrome child" Who says that? I think it's wonderful to adopt a harder to place child but to say that quote....it just sound soooo idk it just made me lol. I almost can picture her getting pregnant and in the hospital with her fingers crossed "Please have down syndrome, please, please...ahhhh a normal one...oh well better luck next time"

reply

I can see where Valmont is coming from. it is not something to 'want' initially. I mean, the child never asked to be born like that.

It is wonderful to not care how the child comes to you [normal or special needs] but it seems like something someone vying for a spot on OPRAH or DR PHIL would say. I have seen people like this. they have children already and then they go out and adopt three more from Russia and then tell Oprah/Dr.Phil about it so they can congratulate them. That is bizarre.

Oh God. Fortune vomits on my eiderdown once more.

reply

I get you. Sadly enough, some people in this world are selfish & egotistical (imagine that!)...and I know of these people wanting to do good "deeds", just to make themselves look good. Boo.

her comment was strange.

Downs kids are so out... Autistic kids are in....

I know her comment seemed weird.. but when I was a younger I was always drawn to storys on TV about autism and spectrum disorders... WHen I had my baby and at six she was found to be asperger I sort of had this weird ahhhhh the universe prepared me for this moment...

"Downs kids are so out... Autistic kids are in.... "

bwahahahahahahaha - that's great!!!! And i totally relate because that is my profession and my son has aspergers too!! Cheers!!!

It sounded odd when spoken aloud but that's how most of us think. Like when we see commercials on TV showing starving children in Africa or abused pets, it makes us want to help. So aren't we thinking "I want to help that starving African child" or "I want to adopt that abused, 3 legged dog".

reply

That really was an awful comment to make. Really makes it look like she only adopted him based on his disability (to 'show' him off and make herself look/feel better) and not because she loved him. Ugh.

reply

Exactly what i was thinking of super-staff.

reply

She forgot to add "This is our adopted blessing, he has down syndrome...I have always wanted a down syndrome baby ever since I discovered Sarah Palin"

I'm willing to take that leap of faith.

reply

I don't think she meant it to sound as odd as it did, but it was a strange thing to say none the less.

"When death sleeps, it dreams of me."

reply

I didn't see the episode but the OP has a valid point. It is a very odd comment to make.

I had a cousin who was Downs syndrome who passed away and though he was loved it was hard on the parents, the father had a hard time with it.

To have someone talk about it like they selected a certain type of dog is disturbing.

It was definitely expressed poorly.
