the question of what happened to Claire

That was a big mystery and one that was left for all of Season 5 for them to play on later.

My question is, during her absence, how did you expect they would explain it? I thought that when she appeared in Cabin Fever she seemed like she'd gained some kind of knowledge, and Christian wasn't yet revealed as the Man in Black/Smoke Monster. So, especially when time travel became an element in Season 5, I thought maybe Christian had taken her on a special just-the-two-of-them, time-travel-on-the-Island trip, which was going to show Claire as knowing some key answers in the final season that would help save them or something. I can't be more specific, it was only my vague thought in that interim, and clearly I was very wrong, which is fine.

Just curious as to what others' might have been.

She was one of the characters I barely cared for, so the resolution of that story was of little interest to me. I think as a character, her story had run its course, so the writers, rightly shelved her until the final season. I´m trying to think after season 1 and 2 if she did anything noteworthy apart from be Charlie´s love interest and look after Aaron.

I agree with this. In a nut shell, her character never really materialized (that was a huge cast) and she was slowly written out of the show like her brother.

Claire's behavior in the second half of the show was a little disjointed and annoying at times. She was always mad and her hair an endless mess. Her leaving Aaron on a whim just over halfway through the show was one of the most unrealistic things her character did too.

True, but... In all fairness, how could she not be mad, and I understand hair care not being her priority. And I never felt like she left Aaron on a whim. We see her wake up to Smokey as Christian, and the next time we see her, she's with him in Jacob's cabin, and acting not in her right mind. I always felt more like Smokey as Christian exerted some sort of hypnotic power over her. Of course why he singled her out and went after her, and in such a prolonged manner, becomes the real question
