Was the character Tom Friendly an older version of Sawyer?

I don't see why not. They've got time travellers crossing paths all over the place, why not have a Sawyer stuck on the island turn into Tom Friendly? It sure makes Tom's initial lines make a lot of sense. I think they were planning on doing that and got sidetracked into other story lines.

Sawyer and Tom Friendly looked nothing alike and were very different..aside from the fact that Tom Friendly was gay and Sawyer was anything but.
There was never this plan.

Are you talking to me? I really do think they meant Sawyer and Tom Friendly to be the same character across timelines, but the writers themselves got confused as the seasons wore on. (Or at least, they wanted to keep that option open.)
