Is it him, or ME?

People are being way too judgmental of Gilliam and it is only because of their own discomfort.

Yes, a lot of scenes in the movie are weird and even grotesque.

It's okay for you to feel uncomfortable.

It's NATURAL.

Everyone KNOWS that none of us have considered these situations... and no one has an EZ morality template that fits exactly and allows any fool to pass final judgement.

Our comfort zones are challenged and we are asked to consider uncomfortable situations.

Some folks like a challenge and see potential for growth and some people are offended and consider the same challenge an affront.

I too, for a moment, wanted to blame Gilliam and judge him for it. Even though that little girl lived through some bizarre situations and was able to maintain innocence, strength and dignity; even though the character was remarkable, as well as the performance, I couldn't get past the 'challenging' scenes and questioned why Gilliam had included them.

He sure did a good job of giving ME an opportunity to grow.
I was repulsed by certain scenes and then immediately ashamed at how quick I was to JUDGE people in situations that I had never considered; people dealing with loneliness and ignorance that I cannot even comprehend; marginalized, forgotten people that circumstance has pushed to the fringe.

It's NOT Gilliam, or even the characters in the movie that I was judging, but myself.

FEW may understand what I'm saying, but there it is.

I don't think the film was a challenge, i just sat down and watching it, enjoyed it, ran with it, let it all unfold and at the end went and made cup of tea and thought to myself that was a bit dull.

After all it's only a movie.

If that's all you arrived at after watching the film, then you would probably be better entertained by throwing on Troy next time.

tigerber, I thought that was a fantastic and deep response to a movie with equal traits. Gilliam mentioned at the beginning of Tideland that half the people will love the movie, and half will want to kill him for making it (or something to that effect). He knew EXACTLY what buttons to push to get this reaction and he did it as one of the most gifted storytellers in the filmmaking business. How can you take a book like that and turn it into something for the big screen? Who else but Gilliam would undertake such a morbid task that would have no chance whatsoever to pull in profit for those involved? When you step back and look at filmmaking as a business, it makes movies like these all the more rare and wonderful, and I'm glad you are able to see that core value beneath the initial layers of shock, disgust or confusion. There are certainly morbid movies out there that have no redeeming qualities whatsoever; Tideland is not one of them.

Very well said, somehow i had not seen this film till yesterday and i have to say i was hugely impressed. For the most part i must say i took the imagery that many would consider disturbing in the same matter of fact way that Rose did so overall it did not bother me (the semi pedophile scenes did bother me but not because of what was happening as on her part it was very innocent and sweet but for what might happen) and i just wish more people would open their minds and just go with it. One of the best film watching experiences i have had in years.

I don't think at those scenes as pedophilia, remember that he had a boy's mind in an adult body. Also nothing happened between them. I can honestly say Tideland is the most beautiful movie I have ever seen. It shocked me in so many ways. I could watch it a million times :)
