What does the title mean? I just saw this film at the Galway Film Fleadh, and I really enjoyed it. I thought the ending was a bit abrupt and left things open, but it was still quite good.

I'm glad to learn it has been shown overseas! Where is the Galway Film Fleadh? Did they keep the original title?!
Let me explain the title: The Chartreuse is the name of a massif, in the French Alps, near Grenoble, where there's a Regional Natural Park now. It's where it has been partly shot (the scenes at the hospital, with the birds and the bathtub, with the paragliders...). I must say that it's the exact same title as the novel it's adapted from and the novelist is from this region and loves to walk in the Chartreuse massif.
In this massif, there is a monastery founded by monks who are called the Chartreux. They take a vow of silence so that's the parrallel with Eva who becomes mute after her accident: the little Chartreuse.
NB: the Chartreux are famous for the liquor they make, which is called Chartreuse, but of course there's no link with the film. If you want to learn more about that region etc, you'll find some informations there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chartreuse

Yeah the sex scene was ridiculous. And there isn't enough story in the end to prove the mother really changed. The actor had the same facial expression all throughout the movie; she wasn't allowed one outburst or revelation or anything.

Well let's come back to the subject: I agree that Marie-Josée Croze is not always good in this film (I guess the fact that she didn't get along very well with the director had a consequence on her acting...)
I prefer her in "Les Invasions barbares" or "Mensonges et trahisons".
But Olivier Gourmet is great. He's both a great man and a great actor.

About the ending:
I also think the ending is a bit weak. In fact I hate the last sequence where we see Eva smiling with her class mates. It sounds unreal after what happened and considering how she used to be... That's a TOO happy ending I think.
The other thing I don't like is the "let's beep on the motorway side" sequence! It also sounds completely unreal to me...

The end of the original novel is far more tragical since both Etienne and Eva die in the montain at the end...
