Judging from the filming locations, I'm led to believe that the characters in this film are Scots, not English. Am I correct? If they are English, what part of England are they supposed to be from? Just curious.

They're meant to be Scottish, though some of the actors are not. I remember seeing an interview with (English) Brenda Blethyn who commented that she studied the Glaswegian accent specifically for the role too.
