Probably drugged. This is a popular method used in both horse and dog racing to help the animal either win or lose the race. This is especially prevalent in Great Britain, cocaine being the drug of choice. On another note, several years ago, a pit was discovered where 6,000 greyhounds were buried, after being destroyed when no longer used for racing. Ex-racing horses are being abused, as well.
