no mention of the ...LOTTO..??

Am I just shallow? Or was he already a millionaire? Because if I knew someone was sending me letters from 2 years in the future, I would ask them for the lotto numbers and horse race winners for at least 10 consecutive weeks.
That would make me near a billionaire.

Then I could pay for that post box thingy to be scientifically investigated because, unlike the characters in the movie-I would have to know what was going on there!

reply

Lottery numbers!!! Totally onboard with that. Scientific investigation of the box -- nah, I'd never let the secret out that I had that mailbox! The government would be all over it and me.

reply

Maybe not shallow but perhaps unromantic, lol.
The idea was that true love was worth more than money. Neither character was destitute anyway.

I honestly think it's just because they both weren't very smart... Book smart, yes, but intellectual? Maybe not... In 2006 when I was still in high school I could easily find someone through Google, yahoo, etc... Just from a name and location (even had a side business dedicated to finding my classmates crushes address and phone numbers for a few bucks). This kept eating at me the entire movie about how it was set in the 2000's, but for some reason these two people in technology driven industries had no mind to Google their match, not even once. Furthermore, even if they were some of the few 40 somethings who were afraid of technology, private detectives are still out there for hire, so wtf? Of course I know I'm giving movie characters a hard time because, as we know from horror movies, they're supposed to be dumb for the sake of story... But come on; if it were me I'd have found her within the first month, showed her the letters from herself in the future, took her to the mailbox so she knew I wasn't crazy, asked her future self for lottery #'s and stock movements and then we'd live happily every after building up all of Chicago and creating hospitals.

reply

Intellectual *is* book-smart. I think the term you were looking for is Intelligent.

She would think you're crazy and decide to stay away from you, and then she might follow another life path which doesn't lead to her staying in that lakehouse two years later, and so the letters will instantly stop appearing in the mailbox. Congratulations, you've just ruined your own chances at happiness. ;o)

That would be true if he tried to track her down but what about her trying to track him down? No problems there...

Neil, Neil.... orange peel. ;-)

They made a movie that explored what would happen if Sandra Bullock did that, it was called All About Steve (2009). 

By the way, it was Sandra who lived in the future (2006) and Keanu who lived in the past (2004). So it would be either 2004's Keanu asking 2006's Sandra about the future lottery numbers, or 2006's Sandra asking 2004's Keanu to tell her younger self about the lottery numbers, at which point 2004's Keanu would have to approach 2004's Sandra...

I'd moved on from the lottery idea, and was just thinking about them finding each other and being happy together. It would have been relatively easy for Sandra to track down Keanu. If she did find him, he would know who she is, rather than think she is crazy.

Alright, I can agree with that. It's been a while since I've seen the movie, but (Warning: SPOILERS):

- wasn't that exactly what eventually happened in the movie? and

(Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS!)

- wasn't Keanu actually dead in 2006, until Sandra changed the timeline by sending a warning note into the past?

Sandra didn't seek to find Keanu. It was pure luck that she met his brother and then discovered that Keanu was dead in her timeline. Once she had saved him, she told him where to meet her.

reply

Ah, thanks for refreshing my memory. Though the point still stands that Sandra couldn't have successfully tracked down Keanu in 2006, because Keanu was already dead in that timeline. And if Sandra had found that out earlier and sent the warning when they hadn't been communicating for that long and when they hadn't built a (time-boundary-crossing) relationship yet, then Keanu in 2004 might have thought that she was crazy or pulling a prank on him; and he might have broken off the communication (and died anyway).

So "girl seeking to find guy" wouldn't have worked out well either (in this case).

That is the weird thing, but isn't obvious on the first watch since it is early in the movie. Kate couldn't tell from the mauled body in the street that it was Alex (who she was renting the lake house from). Her boss tells her to get as far away as possible from this place on weekends to escape the stress. So she goes to his property on the first weekend after he dies.

I was thinking from the opposite angle after a repeat watch of the movie. At the end I suppose Alex didn't want to risk anything so he waits for two years. But he could just show up at the restaurant since he is no longer dead.

reply

I've watched the movie only once, on TV, and I think I missed the beginning of the movie (I started watching in the middle). So thanks for filling me in on that. I'd agree that Alex/Keanu probably waits two years because he doesn't want to risk anything; he built a relationship with the Kate/Sandra from 2006, who eventually saves his life with the warning note; if he meets with Kate before she sends the warning note then he might cause a time-travel "grandfather paradox", with unforeseen consequences.

If you get a chance, watch it again from the beginning of the movie. It is kind of neat on how they show the Lake House with Kate and Alex at the beginning (which provides the first time difference clue). I didn't catch it on my first watch since it only lasts a few seconds.

reply

I'll keep an eye out for it!

Definition of Intellectual:
Possessing or showing intellect or mental capacity, especially to a high degree: an intellectual person.

She would think you're crazy and decide to stay away from you...

Even after showing her proof? Honestly if a woman was that closed minded and dumb I'd be happy she didn't get my letters lol.

This is typically what intellectual people do: they quote stuff that they've read in a book or somewhere else. They are highly educated people, but they aren't necessarily (or rather: usually) street-smart. Intellectuals have the capacity to (and tend to) think about things that are abstract, but those are usually not directly connected to the practical problems of everyday life.

By the way, a true intellectual (i.e. "book-smart thinker") would come to the conclusion that asking someone from the future for the lottery numbers and enrich himself that way is unfair and ethically/morally unjust, and hence would refrain from that.

Even after showing her proof? Honestly if a woman was that closed minded and dumb I'd be happy she didn't get my letters lol.
How are you going to show her "proof", so that she'll know that it's not merely a complex magic trick performed by a weird stalker who is after who-knows-what? (The "who-knows-what" most probably being "money", since that's what people whose first topic of conversation is "winning the lottery" probably mostly care about...)

Also, how are you going to prove that you love her (and not just the financial opportunities that your time-defying letter correspondence bring you)?

The movie somewhat addressed it. She realized he was the man she'd kissed at her birthday party. She asked him why he didn't say anything. He said she would have though he was crazy.

It was about finding true love and not searching for a missing person. They followed their hearts.

reply

Yeah, we're talking about a doctor and an architect. They're doing pretty okay.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

reply

But this was magic for Alex and Kate to fall in love. The magic might not work if you are only falling in love with money. And it involved the dog which traveled back and forth between the two time periods.

reply

I see so many wrong scenarios happening if they had tried to go public with their special mail box. For one thing, it probably wouldn't work with anyone but the lovers. For another, they would be deemed insane. And even if they did managed to prove it worked, something tells me they would be investigated to no end (be it government officials or some type of supernatural investigators). Point is, love is what brought the two together (or the canine), and attempting to use it for other personal gains might've been futile. As a side note, as it was already mentioned these two were most likely pretty well off to begin with, so they weren't greedy for the lotto.

reply

Well, said. I agree.
