I dont get it...Why did Skinny drop the tape into the toilet???

He was being nice to DJay a second before.

He accepted the tape just to be nice to him and get him off his back.

Its that man again!!

You can argue it a lot of ways but Skinny didn't care about DJay at all, he couldn't get his name right. He dropped it into the toilet because he didn't give a damn about DJay or his hopes.

I like the observations in defense if Skinny but I think they're wrong. Skinny is a jerk who's become disconnected from his roots which apparently why his music sucks now. EVEN IF he wasn't interested in the demo dumping it in a toilet and unspooling it was a douche move.

At the end of the movie the rumors spreading that D Jay kicked Skinnys ass are indicative of Skinnys fall from grace. D Jay is ascending now because he is still a real artist.

There's a point that no one has mentioned - it could have been a case of self-preservation. There's a liability issue at work here.

If you are any type of creative person - a musician, a writer, a filmmaker - it's dangerous to look at or listen to any unsolicited material, such as songs, drafts of novels, unfinished screenplays, because it would open you up to copyright violation and potential lawsuits.

If a rapper listens to a demo tape, it could influence his own music - there's a chance that he could, consciously or unconsciously, repeat a line or a hook or a phrase that he heard on that demo tape. And then the maker of that tape could sue him for stealing his work.

In the same way, if a writer is working on a novel or a screenplay, it's best for them to not read any other novels or other people's screenplays during that process. Again, there's the chance that an idea could stick in his brain, and he'd repeat it (or borrow it, or outright steal it) in the project he's working on.

I work in an animation studio, and my boss is very careful to not look at other people's works while he's working out the details of a new story - there's too great a risk that he could see something he likes, and accidentally work it into the story he's writing.

If Skinny Black listened to DJay's tape, and then released an album in the future with a song with a similar name, or a similar hook, then DJay could take him to court. In Skinny's defense, the best way to avoid this would be to throw away any demo tape he received, then in the event of any litigation, he could truthfully say he never listened to the tape, in fact he threw it away.

While some music people may be afraid to sample other's music or give them the connections to break into the industry, I think the most successful music moguls embrace the opportunity.

Consider the story of Marshall Mathers aka Eminem.

He tried for years to get looks with music producers and most of them barely gave him the time of day because he was a white rapper in a black rapper's world.

Then Dr Dre listened to his tracks and reportedly told an associate to "go get him now" and the rest is history. During an interview he said "I dont care if you are purple, if you can sling it, I wanna work with you."

Dr Dre got a significant cut of Eminem's record sales. BTW, Eminem is the biggest selling music artist since 2000 and has gone multi-platinum.

If you can identify an up and coming star before the big music studios get to him/her, you can make a mountain of money.

Music careers, specially in hip hop/rap have a limited shelf life. If I was a rap star, I would encourage people to send me demo CDs. Sure, 99% of them will be trash but you never know lightning could strike and you might find the next Eminem somewhere in those demos. It's worth the risk.

If black folks and other hip hop lovers would spend as much time and energy on reading, writing and math, as they do analyzing this movie, they would be better off.....

1. Either he was a 2 faced jerk or
2. Was so fd up that it dropped in while he was peeing

If he was that bad off though, why did have the presence of mind to pull his piece? I vote for 1.
